Recently, news around Nigeria has shown how a state Governor sacked the state epidemiologist for refusing to manipulate the state’s Covid-19 figures. A state in the federation had also allegedly requested large billions of naira for the fight against Covid-19.
Whilst others are politicising the situation, it is commendable to note that Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has refused to compromise on this. Instead, Governor Bello has been up and doing, trying to prevent Kogi from having an index case of the virus.
The Kogi state Governor has procured test kits for Covid-19 awaiting NCDC validation of the state’s PCR and GeneXpert machines to commence testing.
Due to the limited number of test kits across the globe, it is unwise to go about sporadic testing of Kogites.
The Governor and his team members including the Squadron chairman and Secretary, Chief Edward Onoja and Dr Saka Haruna Audu respectively, has advised that only those who have had contacts with case suspects or show symptoms should be tested.
The Governor, in his proactive nature, has set up three isolation centres, launched risk assessment app to ascertain the level of risk among indigenes, set up GPS tracking and control centre for case monitoring.
Kogi state government also conducted awareness programs for citizens and donation of hand sanitizers and hand washing containers to public places. It also procured PPEs, thermometers, multi-channel patient monitor and other medical consumables aside carrying out training and retraining programs for health workers.
