Bauchi town was thrown into deep sorrow yesterday when an unidentified young boy lost his life in the midst of the massive crowd gathered for the funeral prayer of the late revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.
The incident occurred at the Eid Prayer Ground (Filin Idi), where thousands of mourners had assembled to pay their final respects to the late Sheikh. Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd was so large and tightly packed that movements became difficult, and in the chaos, the boy tragically fell unconscious and later passed away.
What made the tragedy even more disturbing was the fact that no one within the crowd seemed to know who the boy was, where he came from, or the family he belonged to. People nearby stated that he appeared alone before the unfortunate incident occurred.
Authorities have since appealed to the general public to help share the information widely so that his family or relatives may be found. The community is being urged to come forward with any clue, no matter how small, that could assist in identifying the boy.
His remains were initially taken to the healthcare facility located in the Bakaro area, behind the palace, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival. There is, however, a possibility that his body may be transferred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for proper documentation and further procedures.
As the city mourns the passing of the respected Sheikh, this additional tragedy has deepened the sense of grief—leaving many praying that the boy’s family is identified soon so he can be laid to rest with dignity.
