Activist Edime Urges Tinubu, APC Leadership to Address Rising Petrol Prices
By Our Correspondent
A political activist and youth advocate, Edison Atumeyi Edime, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to urgently address rising petrol prices and introduce measures to ease the economic burden on Nigerians.
Edime made the appeal in a statement in which he expressed concern over the impact of increasing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices on transportation, food costs, agriculture, manufacturing, small businesses and the general cost of living.
He noted that rising fuel prices had far-reaching consequences beyond filling stations, explaining that higher transportation costs often translate into increased prices of foodstuffs and other essential commodities.
According to him, traders face higher distribution expenses, farmers spend more on transporting agricultural produce, small businesses struggle with rising operating costs, and households are compelled to stretch their limited incomes to meet basic needs.
Edime acknowledged the economic challenges associated with governing Nigeria but maintained that the government had a responsibility to listen to citizens, assess the effects of its policies and consider practical measures to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
He called for renewed national engagement on fuel affordability and policies aimed at reducing the financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians.
Edime Proposes Measures to Reduce Fuel Costs
The activist urged President Tinubu and the Federal Government to explore viable economic and policy options that could make petrol more affordable.
He specifically called for a review of the factors driving domestic fuel prices, efforts to address avoidable supply and distribution costs, greater transparency in the petroleum market and measures capable of delivering tangible relief to consumers.
Edime also advocated targeted interventions for public transportation, agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises and other critical sectors whose operations are significantly affected by fuel prices.
He said such measures could help ease pressure on households, support productive economic activities and improve the capacity of Nigerians to meet their daily needs.
While acknowledging that fuel prices are influenced by several economic factors, he stressed the importance of developing sustainable policies that could reduce the burden on consumers without undermining the stability of the economy.
APC National Working Committee Asked to Intervene
Edime also appealed to the APC National Working Committee to give serious attention to public concerns over petrol prices and the rising cost of living.
He said the party’s national leadership could use its position to communicate citizens’ concerns to the Federal Government and encourage constructive discussions on policies affecting workers, traders, farmers, artisans, transport operators, students and vulnerable households.
According to him, party loyalty should go hand in hand with listening to the people, adding that constructive criticism should be seen as an opportunity to improve policies, strengthen public confidence and address legitimate grievances.
He urged the party leadership to encourage a frank assessment of the economic pressures facing Nigerians and support dialogue aimed at identifying workable solutions.
Calls for Practical Relief for Nigerians
The youth advocate said ordinary Nigerians wanted to earn a living, feed their families, educate their children and operate businesses without being overwhelmed by rising expenses.
He noted that workers needed better purchasing power, farmers required manageable production and transportation costs, while traders needed more affordable ways to distribute their goods.
He also expressed concern about the challenges facing young people seeking economic opportunities in an environment of rising living costs.
Edime clarified that his appeal was not intended to promote confrontation or political hostility but to encourage responsive governance, transparent decision-making and practical economic interventions.
He urged the Federal Government to communicate clearly with Nigerians about the measures being considered to address fuel affordability and the wider cost-of-living crisis.
In his concluding remarks, Edime called on President Tinubu, the Federal Government and the APC National Working Committee to treat fuel affordability as an urgent national concern and prioritise measures capable of improving household purchasing power.
He maintained that every sustainable effort to reduce fuel costs, ease transportation expenses and moderate the pressure of rising prices deserved serious consideration in the interest of Nigerians.
The statement was signed by Edison Atumeyi Edime, a political activist and youth advocate.
