Climate Action: Igalamela Lawmaker Urges Kogites to Embrace Tree Planting

By Odimayo O.F

The member representing Igalamela-Odolu Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Major Enefola, has called on residents of the state to actively engage in tree planting as a crucial step in combating the adverse effects of climate change.

Hon. Enefola made the call on Thursday after participating in a symbolic tree planting exercise at the Assembly complex in Lokoja.

The event was part of an ongoing campaign by the Kogi State House of Assembly to promote environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise, the lawmaker emphasized the need for a collective response to climate-related challenges, including erosion, flooding, and environmental degradation.

“Planting trees is our collective responsibility to save the environment. What we have done today at the Kogi State House of Assembly is to set a clear example for our communities to emulate,” he said.

According to him, encouraging afforestation will not only mitigate the effects of climate change but also enhance food security and prevent ecological disasters.

“Tree planting helps in reducing erosion, controlling flooding, and improving soil fertility. It is directly linked to better agricultural yields and a healthier ecosystem. We must begin to see tree planting as a necessity, not an option,” he added.

Hon. Enefola also condemned the rampant deforestation being carried out by some individuals in the state, warning that the full weight of the law would be applied against anyone caught destroying the environment.

“Our forests are being depleted at an alarming rate due to illegal logging and irresponsible tree felling. This is unacceptable. Anyone found engaging in such practices will face the consequences as stipulated by law,” he warned.

He further urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to take ownership of the campaign by promoting environmental education and encouraging tree planting in their localities.

“As leaders, we must guide our people towards sustainability. Let’s go back to the culture of planting and protecting trees. Climate change is real, and the signs are visible across the globe. We must act now,” Enefola stressed.

The lawmaker’s remarks come at a time when governments and institutions across the world are adopting green initiatives to combat the global climate crisis.
