CPI, COSROPIN holds maiden
Kogi older persons hangout

The Challenged Parenthood Initiative (CPI) in collaboration with Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN) on Saturday held it maiden edition of the Older Person’s Hangout programme in Kogi State.

It was gathered that the program is aimed at championing the cause of inclusive aging, to advocate for the rights of indigenous and vulnerable Older Persons in Kogi, and to pave the way for a future where every individual can age with dignity and grace.

Speaking at the occasion, the Executive Director of CPI Eunice Abimbola Agbogun said ” Today marks a significant step towards a future where our cherished older population, by ensuring a dignified and joyful aging experience for our older citizens, particularly those who have been marginalised and discriminated against in our society.

“The vision behind the Hangout Activities is deeply rooted in the belief that every individual, regardless of age or background, deserves to lead a life filled with purpose, vitality, and fulfilment. As we all know, Kogi State presents unique challenges for our senior citizens.

” Many face social isolation, limited access to healthcare, retirement pension and a struggle to maintain a dignified quality of life. These are not burdens they should bear alone. Through this platform, we aspire to bring together Older Persons from diverse communities, starting from Adankolo community in Lokoja local government area by providing them with opportunities to participate in a wide array of activities, promote healthy living practices, and establish valuable networks of support.

“Central to our mission are the dedicated efforts of professional Health Care Workers, Caregivers, and Volunteers who generously contribute their time and expertise to ensure the well-being of our elderly population. Their unwavering commitment to service exemplifies the spirit of compassion and solidarity that lies at the heart of our endeavour.

“This first gathering is just the beginning. And as we gather here today, let us reflect on the profound significance of this moment. It is not merely the commencement of an event but rather the dawn of a transformative movement—one that seeks to uplift and empower those who have long been overlooked or marginalised.

According to her, “I extend a heartfelt appeal to all stakeholders present here to join us in this critical mission. To our esteemed government agencies: We implore your support in creating long-term, inclusive policies that prioritise the well-being of our elders.

“To our dedicated NGOs and philanthropists: Let us join forces with COSROPIN in Kogi, leverage resources, and amplify the needs of our senior citizens.To the Media and vibrant leaders in communities across Kogi’s 21 LGAs:

“We need your active participation and support. Spread the word, encourage your elders to engage, and become champions for their empowerment.Together, through intentional programming and frequent interventions like this across the state, we can create a ripple effect of positive change”.

The Commissioner for Women affair and social development in Kogi State Hajia Fatima Momoh who was represented by Inah Oseni Isaac, Director, planning research and statistics of the ministry
reiterates the Government commitment to cater for the wellbeing of the elderly in the State.

 

“The Government in this year budget has proposed the construction of reception center for the elderly. The Government in a bid to mitigate the effects of the economic hardship has created a social investment agency to respond to all social protection request especially as it affects the elderly in the society. Alot of activities has been lined up to celebrate the elderly in Kogi State which will be done continuously to make our elderly smile and live longer” he added.

In his goodwill message, the Imam in charge of central mosque two Adankolo Muhammad Abubakar Abdallah acknowledged that in Africa traditions, old people are well cherished. He admonished Children to always respect their parents and the elderly.

The clergy, however, called on Nigerians to always be kind to their parents and elderly for them to have a better tomorrow.

He thanked the organization for looking at the elderly, just as he called on them to embark on more sensitization to accommodate more elderly in Kogi State.

Also speaking, the clergy in charge of St Luke Anglican Church Adankolo Venerable Timothy Akande thanked the organizers for this laudable initiative adding that, parents should train their Children on the part of sincerity, love and fear of God.

He said “We are happy that this thing is starting first from Kogi State and happening in Adankolo. So, it is the responsibility of Parents to train their Children properly, say good thing from your mouth and bless them. Some of you are not witch but your attitude is more than a witch. We must do the right thing to secure the future of your Children and generation unborn”

Over 100 older persons participated in the maiden older Person’s Hangout programme in Kogi State.

Highpoint of the event includes free medical checkup, games, cultural display and intergenerational knowledge transfer.
