The Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, is currently representing Nigeria at the prestigious 12th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which officially commenced today, Wednesday, 17th September 2025, in the capital city of China.
This year’s high-level security dialogue brings together Defence Ministers, Chiefs of Defence Staff, military strategists, and security experts from over 100 countries, including Russia, France, Singapore, Vietnam, Brazil, and Nigeria. Delegations from key international and regional organizations are also in attendance, reaffirming the Forum’s status as a global platform for promoting security dialogue and cooperation.
The theme of the 2025 edition, “Upholding International Order and Promoting Peaceful Development,” reflects the urgent need for global consensus and multilateral cooperation in a world facing increasingly complex security challenges. The Forum’s agenda is built around four plenary sessions and eight parallel breakout sessions. Topics of focus include:
Global Security Governance
Asia-Pacific Security Cooperation
Safeguarding International Order
Building Regional Peace
Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, in his capacity as Nigeria’s Defence Minister, is expected to deliver Nigeria’s position on a number of key issues, including the importance of regional cooperation in addressing terrorism, maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, and the role of military diplomacy in conflict prevention.
The Minister’s participation underscores Nigeria’s continued commitment to international peace, security collaboration, and the strengthening of diplomatic ties with global partners—especially at a time when security dynamics in West Africa and the wider African continent demand coordinated international response.
Nigeria’s presence at the Forum also opens avenues for bilateral meetings, defence cooperation agreements, and knowledge exchange with some of the world’s foremost security institutions and defence leaders.
The Ministry of Defence views the Honourable Minister’s engagement at the 12th Xiangshan Forum as a strategic opportunity to project Nigeria’s voice on global security matters and to reinforce her role as a key player in African and global peacekeeping and stability initiatives.
