Security remains the bedrock of sustainable development, economic prosperity and social harmony. It creates the enabling environment for businesses to thrive, investments to flourish and communities to achieve their full potential. As societies continue to evolve, the need for innovative, collaborative and forward-looking approaches to security management has become increasingly important.

It is against this backdrop that the decision of the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to convene the Delta Security Summit stands out as a bold and commendable initiative. Scheduled to hold on June 17 at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, the summit, themed “Security: A Collective Responsibility,” reflects proactive leadership and a shared commitment to strengthening peace, safety and social stability across the state.

The summit represents a strategic platform for meaningful engagement among critical stakeholders whose contributions are essential to building a secure and prosperous society. It underscores the understanding that sustainable security is best achieved through cooperation, shared responsibility and strong partnerships among government institutions, security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and citizens.

One of the major strengths of the summit is its broad-based inclusiveness. Participants are expected from various sectors, including security and law enforcement agencies, local government councils, traditional institutions, religious bodies, community-based organizations, youth groups, professional associations, transport unions and market leaders. Such diversity of participation provides a unique opportunity for robust dialogue, knowledge sharing and collective problem-solving.

The gathering also recognizes the vital role communities play in promoting peace and public safety. Community leaders and grassroots stakeholders possess valuable insights that can contribute significantly to effective security planning, stronger cooperation and enhanced community engagement. Their participation reinforces the principle that security thrives where citizens and institutions work together toward a common goal.

The Delta Security Summit is equally aligned with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which places a premium on peace, security, opportunity and inclusive development. A secure environment remains one of the strongest foundations for attracting investment, creating jobs, stimulating economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.

A particularly noteworthy dimension of the summit is its relevance to the ongoing national conversation on State Police. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his Democracy Day Address, highlighted the growing importance of strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture through reforms that bring policing closer to the people.

In anticipation of this important evolution, Delta State has demonstrated remarkable foresight by positioning itself ahead of the curve. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has already awarded contracts worth over N34billion for the construction of 25 divisional police headquarters across the state, alongside other strategic investments designed to enhance security infrastructure and operational readiness.

These initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to supporting emerging security reforms and ensuring that Delta State is adequately prepared to leverage the benefits of a more community-focused policing framework when fully operational.

The summit therefore provides an ideal platform for stakeholders to examine the opportunities, responsibilities and institutional requirements that will accompany this significant development in Nigeria’s security architecture.

The summit also reinforces the importance of trust and cooperation between citizens and security institutions, recognizing that enduring peace and stability are best sustained through mutual confidence and active civic participation.

The theme, “Security: A Collective Responsibility,” aptly captures the spirit of the summit. It reflects the understanding that every stakeholder has a role to play in sustaining peace, promoting vigilance, supporting lawful conduct and contributing to the overall wellbeing of society.

As stakeholders converge in Asaba, expectations are high that the deliberations will generate fresh insights, strengthen partnerships and inspire actionable outcomes that will further advance Delta State’s reputation as a peaceful, secure and investment-friendly destination.

The Delta Security Summit exemplifies visionary leadership and strategic planning. By bringing stakeholders together around a shared vision of peace, safety and development, it reinforces Delta State’s commitment to a secure, prosperous, and resilient future for all.
