Abuja, Nigeria – In a remarkable recognition of dedication, leadership, and regional integration efforts, the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, representing Kano North Senatorial District in Kano State, has been bestowed with the SANKOFA Award for Legislative Excellence in Africa.

The award, presented by the Network of Sahel Youth for Progress, Development, and Democracy, was conferred in appreciation of Senator Barau’s outstanding contributions to the ECOWAS Parliament, where he serves as the First Deputy Speaker. The award ceremony took place at his residence in Abuja, in a dignified event that highlighted his legislative achievements and commitment to the unity of the West African sub-region.

In a statement on behalf of the organizing body, Dr. Najib Usman, who represented the President of the Pan Africa Youth Association, emphasized that the selection of Senator Barau was a reflection of his efforts in fostering regional unity and deepening integration through the ECOWAS Parliament, the people’s assembly of West Africa.

> “Senator Barau I. Jibrin has been a champion of regional cooperation and legislative excellence,” Dr. Usman remarked. “His unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, progress, and pan-Africanism is an inspiration to the youth and leadership across the continent.”

The SANKOFA Award, named after the African philosophical symbol meaning “return and get it,” celebrates African leaders who exemplify the spirit of learning from the past to build a better future. It is awarded only to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to public service, legislative reform, and African unity.

Reacting to the honour, Senator Barau expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, affirming his unwavering commitment to both Nigeria and the African continent.

> “As the popular saying goes, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ I am humbled by this honour, and I assure you that this will only spur me to work harder in the service of our people,” he said. “At the ECOWAS Parliament, unity, progress, and integration of our sub-region remain paramount. This award is not just a personal recognition—it is a symbol of what we can achieve together as Africans.”

The Deputy Senate President further praised the association for its visionary leadership and its commitment to youth empowerment across West Africa. He noted that recognition from a youth-led body is especially meaningful, as it signals the faith the younger generation places in responsive and inclusive leadership.

Members of the Network of Sahel Youth for Progress, Development, and Democracy, with representation across all ECOWAS member countries, were present at the ceremony. They lauded Senator Barau’s legislative diplomacy, particularly his efforts in promoting peace, economic development, and democratic accountability within the ECOWAS framework.

This honour adds to the growing list of accolades received by Senator Barau I. Jibrin for his legislative excellence and unwavering commitment to regional development and democratic ideals.
