DHQ and National Sports Institute Partner to Revive Sports in Nigeria
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) recently pledged to partner with the National Institute of Sports (NIS) to revive sports in Nigeria.
This commitment was made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a courtesy visit from the NIS Director-General, Mr. Phillip Shaibu, on July 2, 2025.
General Musa emphasized the importance of sports in promoting physical health, development, and reducing insecurity and criminality among youths.
He expressed concern over the current state of sports in Nigeria, which he believes hinders the country’s overall development.
The CDS urged the NIS to work towards revamping the image of sports in Nigeria.
In response, Mr. Shaibu stated that his visit aimed to create awareness, identify key stakeholders, and explore areas of collaboration, particularly in training and coach development.
He highlighted the potential of sports to compete with other sectors in the country and informed the CDS of presidential directives to reactivate sporting activities in Nigeria.
This partnership seeks to promote sports development, engage youths, and contribute to national growth.
