The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been admitted to study Law at Northwest University, Kano, in a move that has drawn widespread public attention and admiration.
An official admission letter dated January 12, 2026, confirmed that the Emir was offered a place in the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Common Law and Sharia at 200 Level, beginning from the 2024/2025 academic session.
The letter, addressed to the Emir at his palace in Gidan Rumfa, Kano, stated that the admission was granted under special consideration after he met the university’s requirements.
News of the development became public on January 15 and quickly went viral across social and traditional media platforms, with many Nigerians describing the decision as inspiring and a powerful example of lifelong learning.
The admission comes barely a year after Emir Sanusi earned a PhD in Islamic Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, in 2025. Despite his status as a traditional ruler and globally respected intellectual, the Emir’s decision to pursue another degree underscores his continued commitment to scholarship and personal development.
Emir Sanusi already holds a BSc and MSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as well as a BA in Islamic Studies and Sharia from the International University of Africa, Khartoum. His return to formal legal education has been widely seen as a symbolic reminder that education has no age, status, or finishing line.
