FIDA Urges Collective Action to End Bullying in Schools

…Interschool Debate Marks Children’s Day Celebration in Kogi

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has called for a united front from all stakeholders in the fight against bullying in schools across Nigeria.

The call was made during an interschool debate held in Lokoja as part of activities to mark the 2025 Children’s Day celebration.

Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of FIDA Kogi State Branch, Barrister Oluwakemi Omeiza Usman, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to tackle bullying, describing it as a social menace that affects the emotional and psychological well-being of students.

“Today, we gather not only to celebrate the brilliance, creativity, and potential of our children but also to address a pressing issue impacting their mental health and safety—bullying,” she said.

“The topic of the debate, ‘Should Schools Take Sole Responsibility for Bullying?’ invites us all to reflect deeply, because safeguarding our children is a shared duty.”

Barrister Usman encouraged students to speak out when they experience or witness bullying, noting that silence can have long-term consequences on their future. She urged school authorities, parents, policymakers, and society at large to work together in creating a safer and more supportive learning environment for children.

“To all the amazing children here today—you are the light of our future. Bullying should never make you doubt your worth. You are strong, important, and your voice matters. This debate is not just a competition, it is your platform to think critically and shape the conversations that define your future,” she added.

Declaring the debate open, the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Kogi State Ministry of Justice, Hajia Falilat Yusuf Musa, reiterated the importance of protecting children’s rights and dignity. According to her, Children’s Day should serve as more than a festive occasion; it should be a catalyst for social change.

“Children’s Day is a call to action. Every child deserves love, education, protection, and the opportunity to reach their full potential,” she said. “This debate highlights the importance of giving young people a voice. Whether you argue for or against the motion, always remember that your words have the power to inspire, unite, and create lasting impact.”

She added that the values taught through debating—critical thinking, confidence, and the courage to stand for truth and justice—align closely with FIDA’s mission of promoting and protecting the rights of women and children.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman and Executive Officer of the Richard Osasheyi Foundation, Mr. Richard Osasheyi, applauded teachers for their unwavering dedication to education and national development. He also condemned all forms of bullying, calling for immediate interventions to create more inclusive and respectful school communities.

The highlight of the event was the keenly contested debate competition, which drew participants from schools and dignitaries from various walks of life. GYB Model Secondary School, Lokoja, clinched first place, while Eagles Academy emerged as the first runner-up.

The event underscored the critical role of dialogue and collective responsibility in addressing bullying and fostering a positive educational environment where every child can thrive without fear.
