A devastating fire outbreak in the early hours of Monday razed three large stores at the popular Singer Market in Kano metropolis, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira.
The inferno, which broke out around 1:00 a.m., affected two market blocks—Gidan Mazaf and Gidan Mangaro—before it was eventually brought under control by firefighters. One of the destroyed stores alone reportedly contained goods valued at about ₦30 million.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Gidan Mangaro, Alhaji Abba Usman, said he was alerted to the fire at about 4:00 a.m., noting that officials of the Kano State Fire Service were already on ground battling the blaze.
“The Kano State Fire Service responded promptly, even before I arrived. Aspire Company and Mamuda Group also supported the firefighting efforts, and we are very grateful for their assistance,” Usman said.
An eyewitness, Kamal Sani, said the fire spread rapidly, consuming stores stocked with food items and detergents. At least eight fire service trucks, alongside water tankers from private companies, were deployed to contain the inferno.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said the agency received a distress call at about 3:16 a.m. and swiftly moved to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.
He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and the total value of losses recorded.
