FROM BAGO VISION TO VELOCITY: One Year of Commercial Flight and the Rise of Minna as a Strategic Aviation Hub

One year after the commencement of full commercial operations at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State stands at the threshold of a transformative era—one shaped by bold vision, strategic investment, and an unrelenting commitment to progress under the leadership of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

Commissioned in March 2024 and operationalized for commercial flights in April 2025 through a partnership with Overland Airways, the airport has rapidly evolved from a dormant asset into a vibrant hub of economic activity and regional connectivity.

At the heart of this transformation lies a comprehensive remodelling effort spearheaded by the Bago administration. The rehabilitation of the runway has enhanced the airport’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate large aircraft, including Boeing 747s. The terminal has also been upgraded into a modern, state-of-the-art facility designed to meet global aviation standards while delivering comfort, efficiency, and safety for travelers.

Strategically positioned as a viable alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, the Minna airport also plays a critical role in national security, serving as a strategic surveillance point for the Nigerian Air Force.

The airport’s designation as part of the Special Agro-Processing Zone (SAPZ) further amplifies its economic relevance. As a cargo hub, it is poised to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, linking farmers and agro-industrial players in Niger State to both domestic and international markets. This aligns seamlessly with the broader agricultural revolution agenda of the Bago administration, unlocking new value chains and boosting rural productivity.

Operationally, the partnership with Overland Airways has delivered tangible results. With thrice-weekly flights—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—connecting Lagos, Minna, and Abuja, the deployment of the Embraer E-175 aircraft has enabled the movement of thousands of passengers within its first year.

In addition to scheduled commercial flights, the airport has hosted Hajj operations, private jets, and high-profile visits, including presidential aircraft landings. Its round-the-clock accessibility has made it a dynamic gateway for business, governance, and tourism.

The ripple effects of this development are unmistakable. The airport has significantly eased the movement of students, professionals, goods, and services. It has attracted investors, stimulated trade, created employment opportunities, and catalyzed economic growth across the state. For many residents and stakeholders, it represents not just infrastructure, but opportunity—an engine for inclusive development.

Governor Umaru Bago’s Urban Renewal and Infrastructure Development initiative is more than a construction effort; it is a strategic statement about the future of Niger State. It reflects a governance philosophy rooted in foresight, execution, and measurable impact. As Minna’s skies grow busier and its runways even busier, one thing is clear: this is only the beginning.
