The Deputy Governor disclosed this when he visited the electronics mall on Thursday to assess the extent of the damage.

He said he immediately informed the Governor when he received news of the fire outbreak on Wednesday evening, the Governor directed him to visit the scene to see things for himself.

Comrade Joel Salifu commended the men of the Nigeria Fire Service, Security agencies and youths of Lokoja for their quick response and support in helping to save goods from the burning building, noting that their actions helped to reduce the impact of the disaster.

Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PEELINKS Electronics Limited, Mr. Peter Onujeme, said he received a call from his staff at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday that the roof of the mall was on fire.

He suspected that a power surge might have caused the incident, explaining that electricity supply had been going on and off before the fire started.

Mr. Peter said the value of the goods destroyed was yet to be determined but estimated the losses to be worth hundreds of millions of naira.

He commended the Lokoja Fire Service for its quick response, saying its intervention prevented the fire from causing greater damage.

He also appreciated the Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the youths of Lokoja for their efforts, particularly the young people who risked their lives to enter the burning building and rescue goods.

He expressed gratitude to the Kogi State Government for showing concern, saying the visit had brought him relief and reassurance that he was not alone during the difficult period.

PEELINKS Electronics Limited is one of the major electronics stores in Lokoja and a notable electronics shopping destination in North-Central Nigeria.
