Gunmen Attack School in Dekina, Abduct 6 Including Principal and NECO Staff During Exam
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that gunmen attacked Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina in Dekina Local Government Area on Tuesday, 14th July 2026, abducting six people while students were writing their NECO examination.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the incident occurred at about 5:25 p.m.
“During the incident, four students, the school principal, and one NECO ad hoc staff were abducted by the attackers,” the statement said.
The police said a combined team of the Police and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation and is currently on the trail of the assailants.
So far, one of the abducted students has been rescued. Efforts are ongoing to secure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and to apprehend the perpetrators, according to the command.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, psc, mni, the Brigade Commander, and the State Security Adviser to the Governor of Kogi State are currently en route to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
The PPRO added that a more detailed press release will be issued as soon as additional verified information becomes available.
The attack on Odo-Ekina comes as students across the country are sitting for the 2026 NECO examinations.
Security agencies have intensified patrols in and around schools in Dekina LGA following the incident.
