Hadejia, Jigawa State – In a major move to address persistent flooding in Hadejia Local Government Area, the Hadejia Local Government Council has earmarked ₦60 million for the construction of a 3-kilometer tunnel to channel excess water from Jaribola Pond to River Hadejia.

The Council Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Abba Ari, made this announcement while speaking to the press shortly after the official commencement of the project.

According to Alhaji Ahmed, the tunnel project is part of the Council’s broader strategy to provide a lasting solution to the recurring flood disasters that have affected several communities, especially around Jaribola Pond. He noted that the flooding has over the years displaced families, destroyed homes, and disrupted economic activities, particularly around the Market Side area.

“Since assuming office, my administration has remained committed to implementing sustainable solutions to the perennial flood challenges in order to safeguard the lives and properties of our citizens,” the Chairman stated.

He further called on residents and stakeholders along the project corridor to cooperate fully with the Council to ensure a smooth and timely completion of the project. He emphasized that once completed, the tunnel would not only mitigate the effects of seasonal flooding but also enhance water management and environmental safety in the area.

Also speaking, the Head of the Works Department, Alhaji Muhammad Ubale Kaugama, assured the public that the contractor handling the project has been carefully selected and is expected to deliver the work in line with the contractual agreement. He added that the project will include an engine house, a water pump, and a heavy-duty generator to support the efficient operation of the tunnel system.

The Chairman concluded by urging the public to continue supporting the Council’s development efforts, stressing that the success of the tunnel project will be a milestone achievement in the ongoing fight against flooding in Hadejia.
