HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths Call On EFCC for Immediate Release of Former Governor Okowa

By Wilson Macaulay

HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths, under the leadership of Comrade Sweet Otiotio, have called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release the former Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, without delay.

The HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths in a firm and united appeal, stated during an urgent press conference that former governor Arthur lfeanyi Okowa Known as “The Road Master” and affectionately hailed as “The Ekwueme of the Universe,” widely celebrated for his transparent and transformative governance during his two terms as governor, which he completed with distinction should be allowed to rest after such a meritorious service.

Comrade Sweet Otiotio, speaking on behalf of HOSTCOM (Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas) Urhobo Youths, highlighted Okowa’s contributions to Delta State and emphasized the impact he made on the state’s infrastructure, peacebuilding, and youth empowerment initiatives. Otiotio described the former governor as a leader whose commitment to progress and development resonated across Delta State, bringing visible change and fostering a legacy of inclusivity and service.

He added: “We cannot forget so soon
his extensive road network projects that linked rural areas with urban centers, Governor Okowa embarked on a mission to make Delta State’s infrastructure resilient and accessible to all. His administration completed over 1,500 kilometers of roads, connecting various communities and facilitating commerce across the state. This earned him the respect and admiration of his constituents, who saw firsthand the impact of his work on their daily lives.”

According to Comrade Sweet Otiotio, the Completion of the International Airport , strategic road networks in Warri, Sapele, Ughelli, and other areas, which Okowa did are pivotal in opening up Delta State to more trade and economic opportunities.

He argued that former Governor Okowa developmental initiatives were not only crucial for economic growth but also reflected his understanding of the urgent needs of the people he served.

“Governor Okowa brought meaningful development that reached every part of Delta State,” said Otiotio. “He was a leader who placed the people first, ensuring their voices were heard and their needs addressed.”

During his tenure, Governor Okowa demonstrated a commitment to peace, particularly in Delta State’s oil-producing regions, which have historically faced tensions and conflicts. By establishing inclusive platforms and programs aimed at addressing grievances and promoting dialogue, he was instrumental in building a more stable environment for the state’s diverse communities. HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths recognized his role in maintaining peace in the state, which has been essential for sustainable development and progress.

He pointed out that the HOSTCOM Secretariat in Uti Road and the cordial relationship which exist today between HOSTCOM and the Delta State Government is the brain child of Former Governor Okowa.

“Okowa understood that without peace, there could be no development,” said Otiotio. “His efforts in fostering unity among the people, from the Urhobo youths to the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and other ethnic groups, reflected his deep commitment to the well-being of Delta State. We believe it’s unjust to hold someone who has served his state with such honor and integrity.”

Continuing, Otiotio said: ” Governor Okowa’s administration prioritized initiatives that targeted youth empowerment and skills acquisition, creating pathways for thousands of young Deltans to participate meaningfully in the economy. His programs, including the STEP (Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Program) and YAGEP (Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Program), equipped young people with skills and resources to become self-reliant, reducing unemployment and fostering innovation in agriculture, technology, and other sectors.”

The HOSTCOM Youth Rep stressed: “Okowa’s approach to governance was marked by a philosophy of inclusivity and empowerment, which resonated with the aspirations of the Urhobo youth and other groups in Delta State. He created opportunities for marginalized groups, ensuring that they had a voice in the state’s growth and future.”

Call For His Immediate Release

Given his significant achievements and the impact he made as a sitting Governor in Delta State, the HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths see Okowa’s detention as unwarranted.
Comrade Sweet Otiotio emphasized the need to recognize his record as a transparent and dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to uplift his state. He appealed to the EFCC to consider these contributions and to ensure that justice prevails, urging the immediate release of the former governor.

“We stand united in our call for Dr. Okowa’s release,” Otiotio said. “He is not just a former governor; he is a beloved son of Delta State and a symbol of hope for many. His legacy speaks for itself, and we trust that the EFCC will act in the interest of justice and fairness.”

The HOSTCOM Youth advocate remarked: ” Lord Denning said: “When a judge sits to try the case, he himself is on trial before his fellow countrymen. It is on his behaviour that they will form their opinion of their system of justice .The Court of public opinion of Deltans according to the submission of Lord Denning have already set Okowa free, so let Okowa be free.”

The HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths’ statement has resonated widely among Delta communities, who remember Okowa as a governor who prioritized development and exemplified good governance. For these communities, the appeal for his release reflects a profound respect for the values he represented and the tangible progress he brought to Delta State.

As the call for his release gains momentum, many hope that this recognition of Okowa’s contributions will not only reaffirm his standing as a respected leader but also inspire future leaders to follow his example of dedication, integrity, and service.
