Ibrahim Idris Dies After Years of Service and Political Influence in Kogi
Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died yesterday in London, with the news generating reactions across political circles and among people who followed his long years of public service.
Popularly known as “Ibro,” Ibrahim Idris was a Nigerian businessman and politician who became the second democratically elected Governor of Kogi State. Born in 1949, he hailed from Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State and built a business career before entering active partisan politics.
Idris assumed office as Governor of Kogi State on May 29, 2003, after winning the governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His first tenure was interrupted in February 2008 after his 2007 election victory was nullified following a legal challenge.

He returned to office after the March 29, 2008 re-run election, which he won, and continued as Governor until January 2012, when he handed over power to his successor, Captain Idris Wada.
Across his periods in office, Ibrahim Idris governed Kogi State for almost nine years, making him one of the longest-serving governors in the state’s democratic history.
His administration was associated with several infrastructure and institutional projects across the state. These included the International Market, Specialist Hospital, Confluence Stadium, Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, housing projects, road construction and improvements in primary school infrastructure.
His administration also supported the development of Kogi State University, Anyigba, including efforts that contributed to the accreditation of its academic programmes. In April 2025, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo described Idris as a statesman whose years in office were marked by infrastructure development, inclusive governance and efforts toward peaceful coexistence across Kogi State.
Before entering politics, Idris was involved in business, with interests connected to construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality. He later joined the PDP and emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2003 election, defeating the incumbent Governor, Prince Abubakar Audu.
His political career subsequently became closely associated with the development of the PDP’s political structure in Kogi State. His 2007 re-election was challenged in court, resulting in a re-run election in 2008, which he won before completing his tenure in January 2012.
Since leaving office, Ibrahim Idris remained a recognised figure in Kogi State’s political history, with his name continuing to feature prominently in discussions about the state’s early years of democratic governance.
