In Gatawa town of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, a fierce gunfight erupted early this morning between troops, supported by local hunters, and the notorious bandits’ kingpin, Bello Turji, who is reportedly leading the attack.
Sources from the area confirmed that the clash began around 6 a.m. when Turji and his group attempted to enter the town but were intercepted by the military and local hunters, initiating a prolonged exchange of gunfire.
The confrontation has placed Gatawa in a state of lockdown, with residents staying indoors amid uncertainty about the outcome of the fight, which continued as of 3:45 p.m. One resident described the encounter as the most intense conflict with bandits the town has experienced, expressing hope that it could mark the end of Turji’s activities in the area.
Despite Turji’s base being in the forests of Shinkafi, Zamfara State, his operations often extend into neighboring areas, including Sabon Birni, Isa, and Goronyo local governments in Sokoto. Local residents are calling for additional troop reinforcements, as it is suspected that Turji may seek backup from his network.
Community members and the authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with hopes that the military will prevail and end the menace Turji poses in the region.
