The Kano Lecturers Forum (KLF), a body comprising academics from Kano State serving in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, has honoured the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, for his contributions to education, human capital development, science and technology.
The lecturers presented Senator Barau with an Award for Outstanding Contributions to Educational Development during a visit to him at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Presenting the award, the academics said it was in recognition of his contributions to “the advancement of education, human capital development, science and technology, and the expansion of educational opportunities.”
The delegation was led by the Chairman of the forum, Dr Abdulkadir Abubakar Bichi of Northwest University, Kano.
The academics said they had followed Senator Barau’s interventions in the education sector over the past three years, noting that his initiatives had supported institution-building, scholarships, postgraduate training, educational infrastructure and expanded access to tertiary education, as well as science and emerging technologies.
The lecturers also unveiled a pamphlet documenting some of the senator’s interventions in the education sector.
According to them, the documented initiatives demonstrated sustained efforts towards strengthening educational institutions and creating opportunities for young people to acquire knowledge and skills.
Responding, Senator Barau expressed appreciation to the lecturers for the recognition, describing it not only as an honour for past efforts but also as a call to greater service.
He said investment in education remained fundamental to human capital development and sustainable economic growth.
“Nothing is too much for the development of education because human capital development is the sine qua non of sustainable economic development,” he said.
The senator reaffirmed his commitment to initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people, promoting innovation and skills development, and improving the socio-economic wellbeing of his constituents.
He maintained that strengthening the capacity of young Nigerians was essential to technological advancement, economic growth and the long-term prosperity of Kano State and Nigeria.
In a separate engagement, Senator Barau received the leadership of the Kano North Marketers Association, comprising traders from the 13 local government areas of Kano North Senatorial District resident and doing business in Abuja.
The delegation, led by its newly elected Chairman, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim Kabo, also presented an award to the senator in recognition of his contributions to the development and empowerment of small and medium-sized businesses.
Senator Barau congratulated Alhaji Kabo on his emergence as chairman and commended members of the association for entrusting him with the leadership responsibility.
He described the business community as an important component of economic development, noting that small and medium-sized enterprises contribute significantly to employment generation, household income and local economic activity.
He assured the traders of continued support for initiatives designed to create an enabling environment for businesses to grow and prosper.
The two engagements, coming together, underscored the growing emphasis on education, human capital development, entrepreneurship and private-sector participation as important pillars of economic and social development in Kano North and beyond.
Senator Barau said his commitment remained focused on supporting programmes and initiatives capable of improving the lives of constituents and contributing to the broader development of Kano State, Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.
