Kano State Wins All-Women Inter-State Debate, Asiya Yasmin Credits Governor’s Commitment to Women’s Inclusion

The Senior Special Assistant to the Kano State Governor on Women Education, Engr. Asiya Mukhtar Yasmin, has attributed Kano State’s victory at the recently concluded All-Women Inter-State Debate Competition to the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to women’s inclusion and the advancement of female education in the state.

Engr. Asiya made this known while addressing participants after Kano State emerged as the overall winner of the debate competition, organized by the African Mothers Initiative in Abuja. The event, held on Friday, July 24, 2026, was themed “Family Inclusion in National Development, Financial Economy and Community Security.” The initiative seeks to promote the intellectual capacity of women and encourage greater participation in politics and leadership.

She said the team’s outstanding performance reflects the administration’s sustained investment in female education and women’s empowerment, describing the victory as a testament to the government’s commitment to developing women across the state.
According to her, Kano State’s emergence as the overall winner was not unexpected, given the administration’s guiding principle of “Kano First.” She explained that preparations began immediately after the state received the invitation to participate, with the government providing all the necessary support to ensure the team’s success.

Responding to questions from journalists on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s efforts to promote women’s inclusion in governance and advance female education, Engr. Asiya stated that available statistics show women currently occupy 20 percent of leadership positions in the state, while 40 percent of political appointments under the present administration are held by women. She described these figures as clear evidence of the government’s commitment to gender inclusion and women’s empowerment.

She further emphasised that the All-Women Inter-State Debate was more than an intellectual exercise, expressing confidence that the ideas and recommendations presented would contribute to shaping public policy at both the national and sub-national levels.

Speaking on the debate motion, “The Appointment of Community Security Team Leadership Should Be Gender Sensitive,” which Kano State supported against Ekiti State, Engr. Asiya said the debate addressed critical national issues with the potential to influence future policy decisions, particularly discussions surrounding the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

She commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for prioritising women’s inclusion, female education, and empowerment, describing the administration’s achievements as a model for inclusive governance and sustainable development.
