Kogi PDP Threatens Legal Action Over Election Timeline.

The Kogi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to take legal action against the State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) if it fails to extend the timeline for the party’s participation in the forthcoming Local Government Elections.

In a letter dated 19th January, 2026 to KOSIEC, PDP Chairman Hon. Muhammed Sanni Gambo cited the party’s involvement in prolonged litigation concerning its leadership as the reason for missing the initial timelines.

Gambo emphasized that the party is ready to participate in the electoral process and comply with revised timelines.

The PDP says KOSIEC, as contained in the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral law, has discretionary powers to regulate local government elections.

He cited PDP’s internal issues have been resolved, and adding that they are ready to participate, explained that the extension is in the interest of fairness, equity, and credible elections.

He added that PDP hasn’t received official communication from KOSIEC since assuming office, called on the PDP to grant it request or face legal actions.

In it response, the KOSIEC Chairman, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri cited statutory constraints, stating that granting an extension would breach the Kogi State Electoral Law and compromise fairness, equity, and transparency.

The Commission listed elapsed deadlines:
– Party Primaries: 12th December 2025
– Nomination Forms collection: 19th December 2025
– Candidate submission: 9th January 2026, as it constraints.

Hon. Gambo however assured KOSIEC of the PDP’s commitment to cooperating with the Commission and stakeholders to ensure free, fair, and credible local government elections.
