Kwara Government Explains Reasons For Shutting Down Popular Abattoir

NICHOLAS UWERUNONYE

Kwara State government has explained that it shut down Mandate Market, Ilorin after reports of possible meeting poisoning.

The state government made this known through its Ministry of Environment, saying also that the measure is only temporarily.

Speaking via a release signed by Amina El Imam, commissioner for health in the state, the state government further stated that the shut down will allow for fumigation and general cleaning of the area following suspected meat poisoning in the facility.

Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, permanent secretary of the ministry, said the steps are part of the efforts to protect members of the public following the incident.

Earlier, a group had alleged that over 33 cattle suspected to have been poisoned were butchered and distributed for sale in markets.

As alleged, the incident happens along Atere Road leading to Al Hikma University campus.
The group, Kwara Monitoring Group (KMG) called on the attention of Commissioner for Environment, Health and KWEPA for an immediate action on the matter.
