LAUTECH Introduces Mass Communication, Linguistics, Yoruba, Four Other Degree Programmes

•••Debunks Killing At University’s Premises

The management of the Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology Ogbomoso, (LAUTECH) has on Tuesday during the 16th convocation ceremonies of the University confirmed the introduction of six additional new degree programmes for intending students of the Institution.

The development was confirmed by the acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Razaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu while addressing congregation present at the grand finale of the 16th convocation ceremonies of the University held inside the Great Hall.

In his address, Prof Kalilu stressed that the academic outlook of the University is rapidly changing in it’s bid to fulfill the mandate of the University and the vision of the Visitor, Engr Seyi Makinde.

He said, “a year ago, the University established the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with four academic programmes, this year we have introduced six additional new degree programmes into that Faculty namely psychology, mass communication, linguistics, Yoruba Theatre Arts, and Political Science, a faculty of law has also been established to run a degree programme in law.”

“All the seven newly introduced programmes have recently gone through Resource Verification, in March this is year, towards the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) approval. We hope to admit students for these programmes in this current academic session as soon as we receive the clearance from the NUC.” The acting Vice Chancellor said.

However, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Lekan Fadeyi has debunked killing of a student of the University inside the Campus during the convocation ceremonies of the institution.

It was reported that a student of the University was gunned down by unknown assailants inside the Campus during the commencement of the convocation ceremonies on Monday.

INDEPENDENT gathered from a reliable source inside the Campus that the shooting that led to the killing of one young man whose identity remains unknown as at the time of filling this report was shot to death while hanging out with friends in a club inside Ogbomoso town.

It was gathered that the victim that was shot dead was a student of Owo Polytechnic, hanging out in a club with his friends before the shooting that took his life started.

“The guy is not a LAUTECH student as being speculated, he’s from Owo Polytechnic, he was not even at the University premises when he was shot, he was hanging out with his friends at a popular lounge here in Ogbomoso in the evening before the shooting started and in the process he was hit by a bullet and was confirmed dead.” The source who pleaded anonymous said.

LAUTECH’s image maker in his reaction forwarded to DAILY INDEPENDENT stated that, “no such issue happened in our Campus.”

He further maintained that, “information from town was that some people got engaged at a night club, far from the University premises, during which one of them got killed.”

Fadeyi added that LAUTECH’S 16 convocation ceremonies that was graced by dignitaries from all works of life would not have held if there was a fracas that led to the killing of our students had happened on the Campus yesterday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso when contacted over the incident said investigation is ongoing on the matter and that update will be provided accordingly.

As at the time of filling this report, the assailants that shot the unknown victim are yet to be arrested, while their identities remains unknown.

The grand finale of the 16th Convocation Ceremonies was attended by Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Raji, Chairman, Governing Council of LAUTECH, Professor Ayodeji Omole and other members of the Council, Former Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Professor Adeolu Akande, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Olarewaju Nassar were also there royal fathers at the ceremony were Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III.

Others include, Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola, Ayinpapo of Ipapo, Olugbon of Orile- Igbon- Oba Francis Olusola Alao, the Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Josiah Ajiboye, Former INEC Commissioner- Alhaji Ahmed Adeniyi Raji (SAN), Hon. Shina Abdul Peller, Executive Director at Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) Engr. Lekan Bhadmus.

Highlights of the events include presentation of Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Civil law and Technology respectively, to Alhaji Ahmed Adeniyi Raji (SAN), and Engr. Yinka Ayoola Ajao.
