Legislature have symbiotic relationship with the Executive in Kogi – Assembly Speaker

The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf has said the legislature in the state has a symbiotic relationship etched on mutual respect with the executive arm of government with common agenda of development as the driving force.
The Speaker stated this in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yabagi Mohammed and made available to the media.
The Speaker was speaking against the backdrop of an induction for speakers of state houses of assembly held in Abuja.
The lawmaker stressed that the Assembly under him is majorly interested in making laws for the development of the entire state across all sectors, stressing that Kogi is in dire need of legal, financial, and other resources that would turn the state around for the better.
He thanked the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, for his commitment to the cause of developing Kogi State, stressing that the Assembly is prepared to assist the executive in recording breakthroughs that would better the lives of the citizens at all times.
While calling on the people of the state to co-operate with government to ensure positive socioeconomic turn around in the state, he assured them of the preparedness of his colleagues across the 25 state constituencies to ensure people – centred legislations for the betterment of the state.
He thanked his colleagues in the state assembly for their support, and promised not to betray their trust in his leadership.
Rt. Hon Umar made a positive impression on his speaker colleagues who all applauded Kogi State House of Assembly for electing him as their head, and described him as the right person for the job, given the passion he exuded in presenting the state’s position in the comity Nigerian legislators.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Abubakar Suleiman of Bauchi State had harped on the issue of autonomy for Houses of Assembly to strengthen the legislative institution at the state level while promoting good governance.
On his part, the Development Director of the United Kingdom High Commission, Dr. Chris Pycroft emphasized the importance of accountability in the executive arm of government, stating that state legislators are a vital link between the state and its citizens.
“They must continue to play their roles effectively by holding the executive to account. This is crucial in delivering efficient governance to the people.”
