LET PERFORMANCE DETERMINE REPRESENTATION IN YAGBA FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY NOT ROTATION.

PRESS STATEMENT
DATE: 28th May, 2025

NO TO ZONING: LET PERFORMANCE, NOT ROTATION, DETERMINE REPRESENTATION IN YAGBA FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY
—In Support of Elder Leke Abejide’s Third Term Bid

The idea of zoning or rotating political offices across districts or communities may have served its purpose in the past, but in the modern democratic context—particularly in Yagba Federal Constituency—it has become increasingly clear that performance, vision, and competence must take precedence over geographical turn-taking.

The House of Representatives seat is not a ceremonial token to be passed around; it is a serious legislative responsibility requiring knowledge, experience, and national influence. Elder Leke Abejide, through two consecutive terms, has proven himself as a rare asset—not only to Yagba land but to the entire Kogi State and Nigeria at large. His unprecedented record of infrastructural development, educational support, youth empowerment, and effective representation is the most compelling argument against zoning.

To suggest that his tenure must end simply because of a gentleman’s agreement or informal arrangement is to undermine the collective will of the electorate. In a democratic society, it is the people—not political calculations—who should decide who leads them. If the people of Yagba are satisfied with the transformational strides under Elder Abejide, then they have the right to renew his mandate.

Furthermore, experience in the National Assembly is not easily acquired. Elder Abejide now carries legislative maturity and deep relationships that are already yielding dividends for our constituency. Why sacrifice all of that for the sake of “rotation”? Why reset our progress when we can consolidate and advance?

We must put the interest of the people above local politics. We must allow continuity where it is deserved. Elder Leke Abejide has earned—not by sentiment, but by results—the opportunity to continue serving Yagba Federal Constituency. Let us not exchange tested capacity for unproven promises.

I, Hon. Dr. Ashiru Abdulganiyu Segun,
Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Solid Minerals,
fully endorse the continuation of Elder Leke Abejide’s representation in the House of Representatives.
Let the will of the people prevail over political zoning. Let progress speak louder than politics.

SIGNED:
Hon. Dr. Ashiru Abdulganiyu Segun
Special Adviser to the Kogi State Governor on Solid Minerals.
