MULADE SHERIFF APPLAUDS TINUBU OVER NIGER DELTA PORTS MODERNISATION APPROVAL, COMMENDS OBOREVWORI FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT
By Our Correspondent
Chief Mulade Sheriff, National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Warri Federal Constituency, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade and modernisation of major ports in the Niger Delta, including the Delta Port, Onne Port, Rivers and Calabar Ports.
Sheriff described the approval as a significant step towards unlocking the maritime and economic potential of the Niger Delta, particularly Warri and its surrounding communities.
He said the inclusion of the Delta Port in the modernisation initiative would create opportunities for Warri Federal Constituency, Delta State and the wider Niger Delta region, if the project is implemented transparently and sustainably.
In a statement, Sheriff said the decision demonstrated recognition of the strategic importance of Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and could strengthen the country’s Blue Economy, attract maritime investments and enhance Nigeria’s position in regional maritime trade.
According to him, the modernisation of the Warri Seaport should go beyond political considerations and be implemented as a long-term economic infrastructure project.
Sheriff said the project could stimulate commercial activities, create employment and business opportunities, attract investment and contribute to restoring Warri’s economic prominence.
He noted that Warri’s strategic maritime location and existing economic activities placed the federal constituency in a position to benefit from the successful implementation of the port modernisation programme.
The NDP candidate also commended the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for what he described as the creation of an environment of peace and stability necessary for economic and infrastructural development.
He, however, urged the state government to extend more infrastructural development to riverine communities, which he described as major stakeholders in the operations and development of the Warri Port.
Sheriff stressed that sustainable development would require collaboration among the Federal Government, Delta State Government, private sector operators and host communities.
He called for deliberate inclusion of the people of Warri Federal Constituency in the opportunities expected to arise from the port modernisation project, particularly in the areas of employment, skills development, infrastructure and business participation.
He further appealed for greater involvement of local communities, youth employment opportunities, development of critical infrastructure and improved security around the port corridor to attract industries and support economic activities.
According to him, the success of the modernisation programme would depend not only on the physical upgrading of port facilities but also on the development of supporting infrastructure and the creation of an enabling environment for businesses and investors.
Sheriff also called for development policies that would translate into tangible improvements in the lives of residents of Warri Federal Constituency as the 2027 general elections approach.
He said the future of the constituency should be anchored on peace, unity, quality representation, economic opportunities, improved infrastructure and inclusive development, rather than ethnic sentiments.
He reaffirmed his commitment, as an NDP candidate hopeful for Warri Federal Constituency, to pursuing people-oriented development initiatives aimed at repositioning Warri as a major economic and maritime hub in the Niger Delta.
Sheriff expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for responding to calls from stakeholders in the Niger Delta for the inclusion of the region’s ports in the Federal Government’s modernisation plans.
The Federal Government has increasingly positioned port and transport infrastructure as part of its broader economic strategy, with the Presidency linking modern infrastructure to lower business costs, improved market access and job creation.
