The Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON mni, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to global peace and security. On the second day of the ongoing Plenary High-Level Pledging Session of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, Minister Abubakar spoke passionately about Nigeria’s role in global peace efforts. He emphasized the importance of multilateral collaboration, underlining that the security of the world is intertwined and that Nigeria’s contributions remain a cornerstone of peace operations across the globe.

Notably, he mentioned Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA), where the country plays a critical role in the rotation of the Base Protection Force. Additionally, Nigeria’s Formed Police Unit is currently serving in the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia, further solidifying the country’s presence in global peacekeeping operations.
Minister Abubakar also underscored Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace initiatives across the West African sub-region. From its pivotal role in the restoration of peace in Sierra Leone and Liberia to recent interventions in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria’s efforts have been crucial in promoting peace on the African continent.
Concluding his address, Minister Abubakar reaffirmed Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to peacekeeping, announcing five additional pledges under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS). These new commitments will further enhance Nigeria’s contributions to international peace operations, reflecting the nation’s dedication to fostering a peaceful, secure, and stable world.
