PRESS RELEASE

Nigeria Reinforces Global Peace Drive, Renewed and Made 5 Additional Pledges at UN Ministerial 2025.

May 14, 2025

The Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON mni, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to global peace and security. He emphasized that Nigeria remains steadfast in supporting the United Nations (UN) and the international community in their collective efforts to foster global stability.

On the second day of the ongoing Plenary High-Level Pledging Session of the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, Minister Abubakar spoke passionately about Nigeria’s role in global peace efforts. He emphasized the importance of multilateral collaboration, underlining that the security of the world is intertwined and that Nigeria’s contributions remain a cornerstone of peace operations across the globe.

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s continued participation in key UN peacekeeping missions. Notably, he mentioned Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA), where the country plays a critical role in the rotation of the Base Protection Force. Additionally, Nigeria’s Formed Police Unit is currently serving in the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia, further solidifying the country’s presence in global peacekeeping operations.

Minister Abubakar also underscored Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace initiatives across the West African sub-region. Under the auspices of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), Nigeria has been instrumental in facilitating peace and stability in conflict-affected nations. From its pivotal role in the restoration of peace in Sierra Leone and Liberia to recent interventions in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria’s efforts have been crucial in promoting peace on the African continent.

Concluding his address, Minister Abubakar reaffirmed Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to peacekeeping, announcing five additional pledges under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS). These new commitments will further enhance Nigeria’s contributions to international peace operations, reflecting the nation’s dedication to fostering a peaceful, secure, and stable world.

Minister Abubakar’s statements at the conference serve as a reminder of Nigeria’s leadership role in the international peacekeeping arena, reinforcing the country’s position as a key partner in the global effort to maintain peace and security.
