NWAN unveils Ultrasound Services Centre to prevent maternal mortality in Kogi

MWAN Kogi unveils Obstetrics Ultrasound scan services for underprivileged Women in Kogi state.

As part of efforts to continue to prevent maternal mortality in Kogi State, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kogi state chapter, has launched an ultrasound scan machine for underprivileged women at the primary healthcare facility in Lokoja, Kogi State.

This initiative aims to provide quality healthcare services to underprivileged women during the peripartum period at a subsidized cost.

The President of MWAN Kogi Dr. Yetunde Owa, expressed gratitude to everyone present and acknowledged the efforts of the facility’s matron, Matron Haija Haruna, as well as the executive director of the Kogi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, who was represented by Dr. Emmanuel Bola Jonah Kelvin.

Dr Owa explained that the Association decided to provide critical services given the economic reality that many pregnant women could not afford to go for ultrasound scanning for the period of their pregnancy.

The President stated that the importance of Ultrasound scanning cannot be overemphasised, stressing it helps pregnant women to know the growth and position of their babies in their early stages.

She added that the Association had, out of magnanimity, vowed to provide ultrasound services to enable the less privileged women in society to have access to quality healthcare services.

Responding, the Executive Director, KPHCDA, who was represented by Dr Bola Kelvin, lauded the resilience of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria Kogi for the inauguration of the Ultrasound services centre in Lokoja.

He pointed out that ultrasound scanning is very important for every pregnant woman because it helps them to know a lot about their pregnancy, stressing that pregnant women must go for scanning at least four times.

He added it also helps to know whether pregnant women would be referred or be admitted in the process of giving birth to a baby.

“It helps to know the position of the baby, the position of the placenta and the quantity of the fluids and monitor the growth and development of the baby in the womb.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of the event, Dr Medupin, thanked the President for realizing a long-held dream and encouraged patients to take advantage of the scan services offered at the health centre.

This significant milestone marks an important step towards improving maternal healthcare services in Kogi State, particularly for underprivileged women.

The MWAN Kogi branch remains committed to promoting quality healthcare and reducing maternal mortality in the region.
