Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, and the Yoruba Ronu Ethos

By Seyi Babaeko, MD/CEO Absolute Security and Advance Protocol Ltd

The unfolding tension between two of Yorubaland’s most revered monarchs, the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo, is needless, avoidable, and untimely. At a period when unity is most needed, the Yoruba nation cannot afford a house divided.

For centuries, these thrones have stood as twin pillars of Yoruba identity. The Ooni of Ife, custodian of the cradle and spiritual father of the Yoruba race, embodies origin and continuity. The Alaafin of Oyo, heir to imperial authority and political power, symbolizes statecraft and resilience. Together, they anchor the dignity, confidence, and strength of the Yoruba people. Any discord between them shakes not only tradition but also the very soul of the nation.

It is in moments like this that we must return to the Yoruba Ronu ethos. Yoruba Ronu, meaning “Yoruba, Think,” is not a mere slogan. It is a timeless call to reflection, collective responsibility, and purposeful action. Today, this call resounds louder than ever.

Rather than contention, what the Yoruba people require is harmony of purpose. In their wisdom and influence, the Ooni and the Alaafin must rise above rivalry. By embracing reconciliation, they would not only preserve the dignity of their crowns but also stand as symbols of vision, unity, and stability for future generations.

The restoration of Yoruba glory lies in a shared return to values:

Security: A united traditional front can mobilize communal structures to confront insecurity and protect Yoruba communities.

Economic Prosperity: By aligning cultural festivals, tourism potential, and trade networks, the Yoruba can once again lead as pacesetters in commerce, innovation, and creativity.

Social Vitality: Through renewed unity, Yoruba society can re-ignite its vibrancy in art, culture, and intellectual pursuits, ensuring its voice remains strong nationally and influential globally.

The Yoruba have always been strongest when united. The crowns of Ife and Oyo carry a sacred responsibility, not only to their thrones but to the destiny of an entire people. The call before them is clear: reconcile, lead, and remind the world that the Yoruba remain a people of vision, resilience, and destiny.

In the spirit of Yoruba Ronu, let the drums of division fall silent. Let the songs of unity rise once more.
