POLICE PRESS RELEASE

PLATEAU STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE ASSURES CITIZENS OF THE PREPAREDNESS OF THE COMMAND TOWARDS ENSURING A PEACEFUL CONDUCT OF THE 2024 LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTION OF 9TH OCTOBER, 2024

In order to ensure a free, fair and peaceful atmosphere for the upcoming Local Government Elections in the State, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, psc  has already designed and come up with an effective election security template suitable for guaranteeing a hitch-free process in the forthcoming Local Government polls.

The CP and his management team have painstakingly carried out pre and post election threat evaluation, and have commenced deployment of our personnel to passive flash points and vulnerable areas to nip in the bud whatever could pose any threat to the smooth conduct of elections in the Seventeen (17) Local Government Areas of the State.

We are glad to inform you that Plateau State Command has concluded all arrangements and we are well prepared for the forthcoming coming elections.

The CP wishes to warn mischievous elements whose perception of democracy is the application of violence, to have a rethink as the law enforcement under his watch is committed to dealing with such characters within the dictates of the law.

In the same vein, all political actors and their supporters are advised to avoid actions or speeches that could inflame the political order and above all, to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies in our drive to guarantee a peaceful election process.
Religious leaders meddling in the election processes through unguarded utterances should also desist from such.

In light of the foregoing, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police has today held a meeting with all critical stakeholders within the State in order to ensure that all hands are ion deck toward a smooth conduct of the forthcoming elections. In attendance were heads of other security agencies, religious/traditional leaders, market Organisations, human rights organisations, non governmental agencies, political parties, etc.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, psc assures all
citizens of Plateau State of the optimal commitment of the Command to ensure peaceful elections in the State.

We also wish to inform the general public that quasi – security outfits/help groups such as the Neighborhood watch, Vigilante, etc are not part of the election security arrangement and are therefore advised to steer clear of the election venues and cast their polls at their respective polling units

To parent/guardians, traditional/religious leaders, the youths and the general public, we hereby implore you to monitor and prevail on your children, wards, subjects to be law abiding and resist the urge or temptation to be used to cause disturbance of public peace and violation of law and order during the election period.

All electoral observers both national and international are advised to ensure that they carry along the appropriate identification tags issued by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) and cooperate with the security agencies to ensure their security and safety during the process.

We call on members of the media to note that they have a pivotal role to play in this history making moment in our lives. In times past, Plateau State has recorded a series of crisis which has taken the state backward and as a result hampered economic activities in the state. Therefore as partners and stakeholders in election security, our concerted efforts must be geared towards ensuring a peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections on the Plateau and an unbiased reportage of the events as they unfold. The CP therefore call on members of the fourth estate of the realm to work in partnership with us, having in mind the security and peace of the citizens of Plateau State. We also advise that members of the press and those on essential services should carry along a valid means of identification while on, to avoid any form of embarrassment from our men on duty.

Finally, in a bid to ensure the safety and security of the election process, vehicular movement within the seventeen Local Government Areas have been restricted from 12:00am (midnight) to 06:00pm of Wednesday 09/10/2024.

We therefore, exhort all residents of Plateau State to go out and exercise their franchise without fear of molestation and intimidation of any sort, and to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the election process.
