Today,September 1, we remember with profound gratitude the life and legacy of Rev. Fr. Jeremiah Dermot O’Connell, MFR—the Irish missionary priest, teacher, administrator and extraordinary builder of human capacity whose remarkable service to Nigeria, particularly Minna, Niger State, continues to speak across generations.
Born in Ireland in 1935 and ordained a Catholic priest in 1961, Fr. O’Connell came to Nigeria in the early 1960s and ultimately made Minna his home for more than five decades. According to records of the Society of St. Patrick, he spent about 54 years in Minna, teaching, mentoring, administering and serving pastorally.
For 50 years as a school principal, he devoted himself to the education and formation of young Nigerians. The school with which his name became inseparable—formerly Government Secondary School, Minna—is today known as Father O’Connell Science College, a lasting institutional tribute to a man whose greatest monument was not a building, but the countless lives he influenced.
His influence transcended religion, nationality and culture. His years in Minna produced a legacy of discipline, learning, service and character, earning him the traditional title Jagaban Ilmi, a distinction associated with his contribution to education and knowledge. He was also honoured with the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contribution to Nigeria.
Perhaps the most powerful description of his legacy is found in the affection with which Nigerians remembered him at his departure from Minna in 2017. A widely reported farewell captured Fr. O’Connell embracing Islamic scholar *Shaykh Ahmad Lemu*—a poignant symbol of how his life and work crossed religious and cultural boundaries.
Today, We Say: Happy Birthday, Father O’Connell.
Though you departed this world on 14 March 2018, your birthday remains a moment to celebrate a life that was spent largely in service of others.
You came from Ireland, but Minna became your home.
You came as a priest, but became a teacher to generations.
You came to serve, and became part of the history of Nigerian education.
Your life reminds us that true greatness is measured not by how long we live, but by how deeply our lives improve the lives of others.
