President Mahama confers Ghana’s highest national honour on Indian Prime Minister Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Ghana’s highest honour, the Order of the Star of Ghana, as a solemn responsibility to strengthen cultural and economic relations between the two countries.

He received the award during a state banquet hosted by President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, as part of his official visit to Ghana.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed thanks to “the people and Government of Ghana”.

He dedicated the honour to “the bright future of our youth, their aspirations, our rich cultural diversity and the historical ties between India and Ghana.”

“This honour is also a responsibility to keep working towards a stronger India–Ghana friendship,” he wrote. “India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner.”

When he arrived in Ghana on Wednesday Mr Modi and President Mahama held bilateral and delegation-level discussions.

The two countries signed four memoranda of understanding covering cultural exchange, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, trade standards, and structured ministerial dialogue.

They also agreed to upgrade relations between India and Ghana to what was described as a “Comprehensive Partnership.”

At the banquet, President Mahama described Mr Modi as “a global statesman of transformational leadership,” citing his role in reshaping India’s digital economy and advancing South–South cooperation.

Mr Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Ghana’s development, particularly in youth training, digital technology, healthcare, infrastructure, defence, and mining. He also expressed interest in Ghana’s Feed Ghana programme.

The Indian Prime Minister met with members of the Indian community in Ghana, estimated at around 15,000, and encouraged them to serve as a bridge between the two countries. He announced new scholarship and training opportunities for Ghanaian youth through Indian institutions.

Mr Modi’s visit, from July 2 to 3, was the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over 30 years.

He is expected to depart Accra on the morning of Thursday, July 3, en route to Trinidad and Tobago ahead of the BRICS Summit in Brazil.
