PROFESSOR WOLE SOYINKA AT 92: SDP CELEBRATES A GLOBAL ICON AND GUIDING LIGHT
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) family, nationwide, celebrates a living legend, guiding light, and extraordinary global icon, Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka, CFR, GCON, on his 92 birthday.
The Party joins the family, friends, and millions of the admirers of the global icon to rejoice with him on the momentous occasion of his birthday.
Professor Wole Soyinka is celebrated in Nigeria and worldwide as a reliable moral compass that always points toward truth, no matter how fiercely the stom raged; for his remarkable personality as a living legend. He is greatly revered for being a beacon of excellence; a source of hope that has kept Nigerians motivated and optimistic during the nation’s challenging situations; for his enviable intellect, impeccable integrity, character nobility, his sacrifices and the contributions he has made to building a good Nigerian society and a better world.
He has consistently been a radiant star and a burning constancy in the chaotic Nigerian sky. As a guiding light, he has, in all his adult life, constantly shone light and mapped out a safe path forward in the darkness of society, and his words have acted as a constellation impacting human society.
In Nigeria’s quest for national transformation, Professor Wole Soyinka, like no other in this era, is a solar flare of inspiration in an otherwise dim world.
It is noteworthy that Professor Wole Soyinka was the first African to be awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature for his “wide cultural perspective and poetic overtones fashioning the drama of existence.”
Writing on the exalted Nobel Prize to Professor Wole Soyinka, Reed Way Dasenbrock, a Professor of English and an American literary scholar, noted that it was thoroughly deserved, and it was the first to be awarded to an African writer or any writer from the ‘new literatures’ in English that have emerged in the former colonies of the British Empire.
The SDP cherishes the relationship the party shares with him, particularly through our National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, who is his beloved protege.
The Party continues to draw enduring inspiration from great icons of democracy like Professor Wole Soyinka as a celebrated Nigerian Patriot. His eminent life, towering accomplishments, and unparalleled commitment to nation-building serve as propelling force and inspiration in our commitment to and struggles for a better Nigerian society.
On this special occasion, the SDP wishes Professor Wole Soyinka, an uncommon wordsmith, many more years in good health and all-round fulfilment.
We pray that Nigeria and Africa and humanity in general will continue to benefit from the fountain of his knowledge for a long time to come.

National Publicity Secretary, SDP
