Race for Lagos 2027: Speculations Heat Up Over Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Successor

The political landscape in Lagos is stirring with excitement as whispers about Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s successor begin to swirl. Though 2027 may seem distant, the conversations already igniting within political circles paint a picture of an enthralling contest. From seasoned administrators to legislative heavyweights, familiar faces and emerging names are being floated as contenders for the state’s top job, setting the stage for what could be a landmark race in Lagos politics. Lagos Reporters brings you this exclusive insight into the unfolding drama, capturing the pulse of the state as the race heats up.

At the forefront of these discussions is Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor. Known for his calm demeanour and effective leadership, Hamzat is deeply entrenched in Lagos politics, owing much to his family’s legacy. His late father, Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat, was a founding member of the Justice Forum, a political powerhouse instrumental in shaping modern Lagos. With such a robust political foundation, Hamzat is seen as a natural choice for continuity within the current administration’s framework.

Mudashiru Obasa, the longest-serving Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is another key figure in the mix. His extensive legislative experience and his ability to navigate Lagos’ complex political dynamics make him a strong contender. Obasa’s deep understanding of governance and his connection to grassroots politics position him as a candidate who could consolidate legislative and executive synergy.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, currently the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, brings a fresh perspective to the conversation. A former lawmaker who represented Ikorodu Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Dabiri-Erewa has been a consistent advocate for innovation and inclusivity. With growing calls for a female governor in Lagos, her name has gained significant traction, making her a beacon of hope for those advocating for gender diversity in leadership.

Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the Principal Secretary to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is another strong contender. With his vast administrative experience, including a tenure as the Lagos State Head of Service, Muri-Okunola has earned a reputation as a meticulous and results-driven leader. His proximity to the presidency adds an intriguing dimension to his potential candidacy, suggesting he could leverage federal support to further Lagos’ development.

Akinwunmi Ambode, Lagos’ former governor, is a name that refuses to fade from public discourse. Despite an abrupt end to his tenure, many still regard him as a visionary leader whose infrastructural initiatives transformed the state. His potential return to the political arena could reignite debates about unfinished projects and the importance of second chances in leadership.

Tokunbo Abiru, currently representing Lagos East in the Senate, has built a solid reputation as a technocrat-turned-politician. His financial expertise and legislative accomplishments have endeared him to a segment of Lagosians who believe the state requires a leader with both political savvy and economic acumen to steer its affairs effectively.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Tinubu and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, also stands out as a heavyweight in the race. Known for his legislative prowess and national influence, Gbajabiamila’s entry would signal a move to bring his wealth of experience from Abuja back to Lagos.

Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is emerging as a wildcard. Though his political experience is limited, his visibility within Lagos politics and the Tinubu legacy have thrust his name into the conversation. Many see him as a potential bridge between the old guard and the younger generation of Lagosians.

Tayo Ayinde, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Chief of Staff, rounds out the list of potential aspirants. Known for his behind-the-scenes contributions to the administration’s successes, Ayinde is seen as a continuity candidate who could maintain the current trajectory of governance while adding his unique touch to Lagos’ development.

As the political intrigue builds, one thing is certain: the 2027 gubernatorial race promises to be a defining moment for Lagos. With an array of diverse and accomplished individuals in the spotlight, Lagosians are poised for a fascinating political journey in the coming years. Stay with Lagos Reporters for unparalleled coverage and analysis of this evolving story.
