KANO, Nigeria — A somber cloud descended over Kano State on Saturday as the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, joined the people of the state in mourning the tragic loss of Kano athletes who perished in a fatal road accident. The victims were part of the state’s contingent returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.

The accident, which occurred in Dakatsalle town, just a few kilometers from the Kano metropolis, claimed the lives of several young athletes whose dreams had shone brightly on the national stage. They were returning home after proudly representing Kano at the prestigious event.

In a heartfelt statement, Senator Barau expressed profound sorrow over the loss, offering his prayers and condolences to the bereaved families and the wider Kano community.

“Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” Senator Barau said. “I just received the sad news of the accident involving members of the Kano State contingent returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State. May Allah SWT grant all those who lost their lives Jannatul Firdaus and quicken the recovery of the injured.”

The Senator further extended his sympathies to the families of the deceased, the Kano State Government, and the entire Nigerian sports fraternity, describing the loss as “a painful blow not only to Kano but to the nation.”

“These young athletes represented hope, determination, and the bright future of Nigerian sports. Their untimely death is a reminder of the fragility of life and the need for improved safety measures for our sports ambassadors,” he added.

The accident has sent shockwaves throughout the state, with many mourning the loss of the young sportsmen and women who had carried the hopes of Kano on their shoulders.

As the nation grieves this immense loss, there are renewed calls for improved transportation safety for sports contingents, especially those traveling long distances to represent their states in national competitions.

May their souls rest in peace, and may their memories continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian athletes.
