His Legislative Representation and Political Continuity
In the context of Nigerian parliamentary politics, and the concept of “not changing a winning horse” often refers to the principle of legislative continuity, where constituents favor the re-election of incumbents who have demonstrated effective representation.
Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, is frequently analyzed through this lens of performance-based political support. Legislative efficacy is typically measured by a representative’s ability to engage in oversight, sponsor impactful bills, and attract federal projects to their constituency.
In political science literature, incumbents who successfully navigate the “delegate” versus “trustee” models of representation—balancing the immediate needs of their districts with broader national legislative duties—are often viewed as essential for long-term senatorial development.
The consolidation of legislative gains, as suggested by supporters of Senator Karimi, aligns with theories of institutional memory in the Nigerian Senate. Experienced legislators are often better positioned to secure leadership roles in committees, which directly correlates to their capacity to influence budgetary allocations for their home states and indeed senatorial districts.
By maintaining a consistent legislative presence, a senator can shepherd long-term infrastructure projects from the proposal stage to completion, a process that is frequently disrupted by the high turnover rates often seen in Nigerian electoral cycles of four years Consequently, the argument for Senator Sunday Karimi second tenure is rooted in the belief that legislative maturity is a prerequisite for sustained socio-economic progress in Kogi West. Most importantly, reinforce the idea that Sunday Karimi’s experience and proven track record make him the best candidate for continuing progress in Kogi West, and Kogi State remains a lofty electoral concept.
