The atmosphere was one of mutual respect and a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral defence relations between the two nations.
The meeting began with a cordial welcome from Minister Abubakar, who expressed Nigeria’s gratitude for Russia’s long-standing support in matters of defence and military cooperation. General Evkurov, in turn, thanked the Minister for his warm hospitality and noted that the relationship between the two countries had always been a symbol of strategic partnership and shared interests in promoting peace and security.
At the heart of the discussions was the deepening of defence cooperation, building on years of fruitful collaboration between Nigeria and Russia. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening military ties to enhance security and defense capabilities, particularly in the face of growing regional challenges. Topics covered during the meeting included joint military training programs, exchange of intelligence, and the continued supply of modern military hardware to support Nigeria’s national defense efforts.
Both countries acknowledged the need for a robust approach to combating terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats in West Africa, as well as the broader global fight against extremism. General Evkurov offered insights into Russia’s defense strategies and technologies, highlighting areas where Nigeria could benefit from advanced military expertise and equipment. Minister Abubakar highlighted Nigeria’s growing need for sophisticated tools to support its ongoing efforts to combat internal threats and bolster regional stability.
The two leaders also explored opportunities for increased collaboration in peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism initiatives, and the training of Nigerian military personnel in advanced combat tactics, cyber warfare, and defense technology.
“Russia has always stood with us, and today, we reaffirm our commitment to furthering our defence ties,” Minister Abubakar stated during the meeting. “Together, we can create a secure environment for both our nations, and by extension, contribute to peace across Africa and beyond.”
General Evkurov echoed these sentiments, noting that the Russian Federation valued its partnership with Nigeria, particularly in the fight against transnational terrorism and the evolving threats in the Sahel region.
As the meeting drew to a close, both sides agreed to establish a joint working group to explore the details of future cooperation, including the transfer of technology, military training, and the procurement of specialized equipment tailored to Nigeria’s defense needs. The meeting ended on a positive note, with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of Nigeria-Russia defense relations.
