The Leather, the Drum, and the Sacrifice: Lessons in Humility and Leadership

Dr. Aiyeku Olufemi Samuel

Global Human Capital & Energy Management

As we journey into 2025, let’s draw inspiration from the wise words: “It’s always good for leather to know that the reason a sonorous music is heard is because it is seated on a talking drum and it’s derived from the dead of an animal as sacrifice: a tree doesn’t make a forest, learn inclusivity and collaboration.”

This profound message holds valuable lessons for us:

*Avoid Pride, Stay Humble*

Just like the leather, we must recognize that our accomplishments are not solely our own. We stand on the shoulders of others, and our successes are often built on the sacrifices of those who came before us.

*Respect and Listen*

The talking drum reminds us of the importance of listening and respecting others. We must be willing to hear the rhythms and melodies of those around us, and respond with empathy and understanding.

*Servant-Leadership*

True leadership is not about self-aggrandizement, but about serving others. Just as the leather is stretched and shaped to fit the drum, we must be willing to adapt and serve the needs of those we lead.

*Deliberate Diligence*

The process of creating music from the talking drum requires deliberate effort and dedication. Similarly, we must be intentional and diligent in our pursuits, recognizing that excellence requires hard work and perseverance.

*Emotional Intelligence and Intelligence Quotient*

The combination of emotional intelligence (EQ) and intelligence quotient (IQ) is essential for effective leadership and relationships. We must cultivate both our emotional awareness and intellectual abilities to navigate complex situations and build strong connections with others.

As we embark on this new year, let’s embody the wisdom of the leather and the talking drum. Let’s stay humble, listen deeply, lead with servant hearts, and cultivate our emotional and intellectual intelligence.

Together, let’s create a harmonious symphony of leadership, relationships, and personal growth.
