Tinubu Sacrificed Political Popularity for Nigeria’s Economic Future, Says City Boy Movement DG

The Director General of the City Boy Movement, Hon. Francis Oluwatosin Shoga, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sacrificed his political popularity in the interest of Nigeria’s long-term economic future.
Shoga made the remarks on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the grand opening of Ramsy Paradise Hotel and Suites and an empowerment programme organised by the North Central Zonal Women Leader of the City Boy Movement in the Mpapa District of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to him, the decision by the Tinubu administration to remove the fuel subsidy was difficult and came at a significant political cost, but was necessary to prevent the country from sliding further into economic crisis.
Shoga said the administration inherited what he described as a near-collapse economy, with foreign reserves of about $4 billion. He argued that the government’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate, had contributed to a substantial increase in the country’s foreign reserves, which he put at $54 billion within three years of the administration.
He also linked the administration’s infrastructural development to the impact of its economic reforms, citing major projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Badagry-Sokoto Road.
According to Shoga, despite the significant financial commitments required for such projects, the reforms had created the fiscal space for the government to pursue infrastructure development alongside other economic priorities.
He further highlighted initiatives introduced by the administration to address poverty, unemployment and access to education. Among these, he cited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which he said had enabled indigent students to access higher education.
Shoga also commended Hajiya Ramatu Ibrahim, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ramsy Paradise Hotel and Suites and the North Central Zonal Women Leader of the City Boy Movement, for what he described as her hard work, entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to job creation.
He said Ibrahim’s efforts had contributed to economic activity and the growth of Nigeria’s hospitality and tourism sector.
The City Boy Movement director general also commended Ibrahim for her support for the movement’s campaign for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
He urged members of the City Boy Movement to take the administration’s policies and programmes to communities at the grassroots, saying they should help citizens understand the government’s reforms and the reasons advanced by the movement in support of Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Shoga said grassroots engagement would be important in communicating the administration’s economic policies and programmes to Nigerians and explaining the rationale behind the reforms.
