By Sunday Ajayi – Kabba
The Okun Area Traditional Council has banned the use of the word Oba as title by leaders of communities of non indigenes in Okunland.
The traditional rulers, at a meeting of the Council in Kabba on Friday, September 29, 2023, said it was an aberration and a violation of the tradition of the host communities to continue to refer to such persons as Oba in their places of abode.
Noting that the practice may have given rise to the irregularities in the recent grading and upgrading of traditional rulers in the state, the Council said it was time to put an end to the aberration.
Henceforth, the traditional rulers said, the leaders of the Tiv, Gbagyi, Ebira, Igbo, Bassa and indeed other non indigenes in Okunand should be referred to as Asoju or any other nomenclature that does not desecrate the sanctity of the royal stools of their host communities.
The Council directed all concerned to ensure immediate compliance with the ban.
