Transformative Leadership: Chief Bola Oyebamiji’s Impact on Nigeria’s Inland Waterways

As the Managing Director and CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief Bola Oyebamiji has brought about a transformative change in Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.

Since his appointment in October 2023, Oyebamiji has demonstrated exceptional leadership, driving reforms and initiatives that have improved safety, efficiency, and sustainability along the nation’s waterways.

Oyebamiji has prioritized safety, introducing the Waterways Transportation Code, which has significantly reduced boat mishaps and provided a structured environment for private sector investment in water transportation. Under his leadership, NIWA has achieved a 40% reduction in accidents and incidents on waterways.

The NIWA MD has overseen the commissioning of 15 boats for surveillance, safety enforcement, and emergency response, enhancing the authority’s ability to monitor and respond to incidents on the waterways.

He has also introduced a Performance Management System (PMS) to evaluate staff performance and reward outstanding contributions, boosting staff morale and productivity.

His initiatives have led to a 25% increase in cargo throughput and created over 5,000 maritime sector jobs, attracting $100 million in foreign investments.

Chief Oyebamiji’s leadership has garnered international recognition for NIWA, enhancing Nigeria’s standing in global maritime trade.

He has fostered partnerships with stakeholders, including state commissioners of transportation, to address safety concerns and promote sustainable practices on the waterways.

He has introduced innovative solutions, such as the launch of 80 Water Marshals to monitor key loading and offloading points, to enhance safety and security on the waterways.

Chief Oyebamiji’s vision for a safer, more efficient, and economically vibrant waterways sector has guided NIWA’s initiatives and investments.

He identified the need for modernizing infrastructure, including inland ports and navigable channels, to ensure uninterrupted operations and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s waterways.
He also encouraged deeper  private sector participation in the blue economy initiative, recognizing the potential for economic growth and development.

Overall, Chief Bola Oyebamiji’s transformative leadership has positioned NIWA as a key player in Nigeria’s economic development, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

His achievements and vision for the future of Nigeria’s waterways sector have earned him recognition and accolades, both locally and internationally.
