Warri Urhobo National Congress (WUNC) Mourns Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark

By Wilson Macaulay

The Warri Urhobo National Congress (WUNC) has expressed profound grief over the passing of the legendary statesman, legal luminary, and fearless advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta, Pa. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark. His transition marks a monumental loss not only for the Warri Urhobo people but also for the entire Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.

Pa. Clark, a man of towering intellect and unparalleled courage, was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in the struggle for equity, justice, and fairness for the people of the oil-rich Niger Delta. His advocacy for resource control, true federalism, and the rights of his people resonated far beyond the shores of Nigeria, earning him the status of a revered elder statesman and a beacon of hope for marginalized communities.

The last moments shared with Pa. Clark by the WUNC leadership remain etched in their memories. During a recent gathering in Abuja, the distinguished nationalist spoke passionately about his forthcoming book, The Ownership of Warri, which was scheduled for launch in June 2025.

This work was expected to further cement his legacy as a historical authority on the complex dynamics of land ownership and identity in the Warri region. Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

The Warri Urhobo National Congress, in a Press release signed by its National President, Chief (Dr.) Westham Adehor, JP, and National Secretary, Olorogun Victor Okumagba, JP, made available to Daily independent Newspaper extolled the virtues of late Pa. Clarke, describing him as a “leader par excellence, a dogged fighter, fearless and courageous, a walking encyclopedia of history, and a mentor to many.” His unparalleled recall of historical events, complete with precise dates and contexts, set him apart as an authority on Nigerian history and governance.

Born into an era when activism was not a choice but a necessity, Pa. Clark dedicated his life to advocating for the Niger Delta’s development and unity in diversity. A trained lawyer and educationist, he held firm beliefs in the principles of a united Nigeria where equity, justice, and fairness should reign supreme. He was one of the strongest voices demanding constitutional reforms that would grant oil-producing communities greater control over their resources, a stance that earned him the admiration of many and the ire of a few.

His commitment to national prosperity and stability remains an enduring legacy. Throughout his life, he played pivotal roles in negotiations, policy formulations, and strategic dialogues aimed at ensuring peace, development, and justice for the Niger Delta. His wisdom and guidance on Warri Urhobo issues and the broader Niger Delta struggle will be sorely missed.

As the nation mourns this irreplaceable icon, the Warri Urhobo National Congress extends its heartfelt condolences to Pa. Clark’s immediate family, the Ijaw nation, the people of the Niger Delta, and the Delta State Government. His departure have left a void that can never truly be filled, but his ideals and struggles will continue to inspire future generations.

“May the Lord grant him eternal rest in His bosom,” the WUNC leadership prayed, acknowledging that though the eagle has gone to sleep, his legacy will soar eternally in the annals of history.
