Zoning of Guber Ticket to Ebonyi North Remains Sacrosanct, Say PDP
By Onyeka Nnabu
The Peoples Democratic Party in Ebonyi state has maintained that the zoning of the governorship position of the party to Ebonyi North Senatorial district remains sacrosanct.
In a statement issued by the PDP spokesman in the state, Hon. Richard Nwafor, the party noted that statement credited to loyalists of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Woke, that the PDP state chairman, Onyemaechi Nwele lacks moral and legal standings to zone the party’s the tickets was malicious, unfounded and mere social media bickering.
The PDP spokesman said that for the sake of clarity, equity, justice, and fairness, the Party’s leadership has consistently adhered to zoning arrangements in the state since the inception of democracy.
According to Nwafor: “it has become imperative for us to give an indebt analysis of how PDP continues to respect zoning arrangements in Ebonyi”.
“In 1999 PDP Primary election Dr. Sam Ominyi Egwu won the PDP primary for Ebonyi State governor and became governor from 1999–2007”.
“Martin Nwacho Elechi was the PDP candidate for Ebonyi State governorship in 2 elections, and both times he emerged through PDP primaries”.
“2007 PDP Primary: Elechi won the PDP governorship primary in late 2006/early 2007 to succeed Dr. Sam Egwu, He ran on the PDP ticket in the April 2007 election and became governor on 29 May 2007”.
“2011 PDP Primary election: Martin Elechi won with 634 votes. He was the only candidate in the primary. He went on to win the 26 April 2011 general election with 287,217 votes, defeating ANPP’s Julius Ucha who had 125,248 votes. That gave him a second term as governor from 2007-2015”.
“David Nweze Umahi emerged as PDP candidate for Ebonyi State governor in 2 primaries: 2015 PDP Primary election – First Term. 2018 PDP Primary election – Second Term. Umahi ran as the sole aspirant and won 1,988 valid votes out of 1,990 accredited votes in 2018 governorship seat”.
He added that PDP was committed to safeguarding the interests of its members at the grassroots level and would not tolerate any attempts to undermine the party or disrupt its zoning formula, particularly under the leadership of Onyema Peter Nwele.
“We reiterate our unwavering support for the interim National Working Committee of our party, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and all its members, who have demonstrated resilience in ensuring that the party remains unscathed by the machinations of political jobbers within the ruling party”
“Special appreciation goes to the National Vice Chairman of our party in Southeast, High Chief Dr. Ali Odefa, for his steadfast stance against the enemies of democracy despite facing baseless blackmail and sponsored smear campaigns. The PDP will not hesitate to take decisive action if those involved in unwholesome activities fail to desist and reform, Nwafor said
The PDP spokesman futher stated categorically that the Party would not be intimidated by desperate politicians masquerading as supporters of Nyesom Ezenwo Wike who were hell-bent on sabotaging the party’s efforts.
