2027: ADC Senatorial Candidate Unveils 4-Point- Agenda For Ebonyi South
Onyeka Nnabu
The candidate of ADC for Ebonyi South Senatorial candidate, Barr. Joseph Silas Onu has unveiled a 4-point agenda for the zone if elected in the 2027 general election.
The candidate wrote: “fellow compatriots of Ebonyi South Senatorial District – Afikpo North, Afikpo South, Ivo, Ohaozara and Onicha,
I, Barr. Joseph Onu Silas, present myself to you not as a master seeking power, but as a servant seeking mandate. For too long, our district, blessed with industrious people, fertile lands, and rich human capital, has been held back by representation without impact.
My aspiration for the Senate in the 2027 General Election is anchored on one simple philosophy: People First, People Always. Legislation must have a human face. Development must reach the village, not stop in the city.
If you entrust me with your mandate, my legislative and constituency agenda will rest on four interlinked pillars for the transformation of Ebonyi South.
OUR 4-PILLAR AGENDA FOR EBONYI SOUTH
PILLAR 1: EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT – Building Minds, Securing The Future
Education is the greatest equalizer. Without it, our children cannot compete.
*My commitment:*
1. Legislative Action: Sponsor and support bills for increased TETFund intervention and federal presence in Ebonyi State College of Education, technical institutions, and secondary schools in our district.
2. *The Silas Education Support Scheme (SESS):* Annual scholarship and bursary program for 500 indigent but brilliant students from Ebonyi South in tertiary institutions, with special focus on STEM, Law and Agricultural Sciences.
3. *School Revitalization Project:* Facilitate the renovation and equipping of at least 2 public primary and secondary schools per LGA annually with libraries, science laboratories, and digital learning tools.
4. *Teacher Empowerment:* Organize continuous training and provide teaching aids for rural teachers to improve quality of learning.
5. *Out-of-School to In-School:* Partner with UBEC and donor agencies to return our out-of-school children to the classroom.
PILLAR 2: RURAL ELECTRIFICATION – Lighting Up Our Communities, Powering Our Economy
You cannot have development in darkness. Many communities in Edda, Unwana, Uburu, Okposi, Isu and Akaeze still live in unacceptable darkness.
*My commitment:*
1. *Legislative Action:* Push for full implementation of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Master Plan for Ebonyi South and advocate for our district to be a priority in the Federal Government’s Energizing Rural Communities Programme.
2. *Operation Light-Up Ebonyi South:* Facilitate extension of the national grid, installation of transformers, and completion of abandoned electrification projects across the 5 LGAs.
3. *Solar Alternative:* Deploy solar-powered mini-grids and solar streetlights for off-grid, hard-to-reach agrarian communities and market squares to boost security and night-time commerce.
4. *Power for Productivity:* Ensure stable power supply to our cottage industries, rice mills in Ohaozara and Onicha, and small business clusters.
PILLAR 3: AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT – From Subsistence to Wealth
We are an agrarian people. Our soil is our oil. We must turn our comparative advantage into competitive wealth.
*My commitment:*
1. *Legislative Action:* Advocate for increased federal agricultural subsidies, guaranteed minimum price for Ebonyi rice, yam and cassava, and establishment of a Federal Agricultural Storage and Processing Hub in Ebonyi South.
2. *Farm Input Revolution:* Facilitate timely access to improved seedlings, fertilizers, and mechanized tools for at least 5,000 smallholder farmers across the district per farming season.
3. *Youth in Agribusiness:* Establish the Ebonyi South Agribusiness Incubation Centres in Ivo and Afikpo to train and fund young people in modern farming, processing, packaging and export.
4. *Market Linkage:* Sponsor a bill and facilitate partnerships to link our farmers directly to off-takers, Ebonyi State markets, and international buyers, eliminating middlemen exploitation.
5. *Irrigation & Storage:* Facilitate construction of small earth dams and provision of modern storage facilities to ensure all-year farming and reduce post-harvest losses.
PILLAR 4: YOUTH & SPORTS DEVELOPMENT – Engaging Energy, Creating Champions
The youth are not just leaders of tomorrow; they are partners today. An idle youth is a threat to society.
*My commitment:*
1. *Legislative Action:* Sponsor the National Youth Enterprise and Sports Development Fund Bill to create sustainable financing for youth startups and grassroots sports.
2. *Skills-to-Jobs Program:* Establish Barr. Silas Skills Acquisition and ICT Hubs in each LGA to train 1,000 youths annually in tech skills, coding, solar installation, welding, fashion, and other vocations with startup grants.
3. *Ebonyi South Sports League:* Institute an annual inter-community, inter-school sports competition (Football, Athletics, Wrestling) to discover talents, foster unity, and create pathways to national and international careers.
4. *Sports Infrastructure:* Facilitate the rehabilitation of township stadiums and construction of mini sports arenas in Afikpo and Onicha.
5. *Mentorship & Leadership:* Create a Senatorial Youth Advisory Council to give young people a direct voice in legislation and governance.
MY PLEDGE
I pledge open, accessible and accountable representation. My office will operate an open-door constituency office in Afikpo and Ohaozara with quarterly town-hall meetings in all 5 LGAs. Every kobo appropriated for Ebonyi South will be accounted for. No community will be left behind.
This is not about Barr. Joseph Onu Silas. It is about you. It is about the child in Edda who wants to go to school, the farmer in Ivo who wants to sell his produce, the trader in Okposi whose shop needs light, and the young footballer in Afikpo who dreams of wearing the national jersey.
Together, let us build the Ebonyi South of our dreams”
