A 21-year-old man identified as Umar has been apprehended by members of the local vigilante committee in Kwachiri, Jan Birni, over allegations of repeatedly breaking into the homes of married women and committing theft.
According to reports from community sources, the suspect allegedly targeted homes at specific hours of the day—usually when husbands had left for work or gone to the market.
Taking advantage of their absence, Umar was said to unlawfully gain entry into the residences, where he carried out his criminal activities.
In one particularly disturbing incident, the suspect reportedly assaulted a married woman with a knife while attempting to overpower her. During the attack, he allegedly made away with her mobile phone and a flashlight. The victim is said to be receiving medical attention, while community members have expressed outrage over the growing boldness of such acts.
Residents further disclosed that this is not the first time Umar has been caught in connection with similar offences. On a previous occasion, he was apprehended in the same neighborhood for sneaking into homes to steal chickens, which he allegedly sold for personal gain.
Despite earlier warnings and interventions, he is believed to have continued engaging in criminal behavior.
The Kwachiri vigilante committee confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities. Community leaders noted that Umar had long been under suspicion for involvement in repeated petty thefts and unlawful entry into homes across the area.
Kwachiri, a densely populated community in Jan Birni, has in recent years strengthened its grassroots security structure through the establishment of an active neighborhood watch committee. The committee works closely with residents and, in some cases, law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and deter crime.
Members of the vigilante group reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, emphasizing that community cooperation has significantly reduced crime rates in the neighborhood. They urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious movements promptly, and continue supporting collective security efforts.
The suspect is expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
