In a renewed drive to empower communities and strengthen grassroots development across Kano South, the former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and current Member representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Turakin Rano), has reaffirmed his commitment—together with Senator Kawu Sumaila—to uplifting the lives of thousands of constituents through targeted economic and agricultural interventions.
The lawmaker gave the remarks during the formal distribution of empowerment materials—procured through a joint initiative between him and Senator Sumaila—aimed at enhancing self-reliance, boosting agricultural productivity, and stimulating local entrepreneurship.
The event, held under tight security and attended by political leaders across party lines, witnessed the distribution of farming tools, irrigation machines, processing equipment, sewing machines, motorcycles, and other livelihood-support resources.
Speaking at the event, Rurum began by expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah (SWT) and extended warm appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the intervention funds that facilitated these people-focused projects across Kano South.
He emphasized that numerous constituency projects funded under the initiative have already reached various stages of completion—including infrastructure upgrades, water projects, empowerment schemes, and agricultural interventions. Many have been completed, others are ongoing, while several more are scheduled to begin soon.
According to him, “These projects will significantly reduce the hardship our people are facing. They will create thousands of job opportunities, promote dry and wet season farming, and strengthen small-scale businesses across our constituency.”
Rurum highlighted the huge agricultural potential of Kano South, home to several major dams including Tiga Dam, Kafin Chiri, and other large bodies of water critical for irrigation and food production.
He noted that improving these dams—through ongoing federal and constituency-supported works—will “greatly expand farming activities and ensure massive food output for the region and the nation in the near future.”
He described the region as a “sleeping agricultural giant” now being awakened through strategic investments.
While commending the beneficiaries for their patience, Rurum issued a strong warning against selling the distributed materials.
He stressed that the items were provided strictly for self-reliance, emphasizing that selling them would defeat the purpose of the empowerment programme.
“These items are meant to uplift you and your families. If you misuse or sell them, you harm not just yourself but the progress of your entire community,” he cautioned.
He added that proper use of the resources would eventually allow beneficiaries to help others, multiplying the impact.
Rurum explained that the list of beneficiaries was compiled five to six months ago to ensure fairness and avoid any accusations of favoritism.
He stressed that the selection was done at the party leadership level, in collaboration with community representatives, to ensure that those most in need were captured.
He also revealed that the irrigation wells constructed for dry-season farmers—who are among today’s recipients of irrigation machines—were completed over four months ago, further demonstrating structured planning and consistency.
Acknowledging that not everyone received items today, he assured constituents that “additional phases of empowerment are coming, and those who were not captured in this round should expect inclusion in future programmes.”
In his closing remarks, the Turakin Rano paid glowing tribute to key political leaders who supported the initiative, including:
Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the APC and former Governor of Kano State
Senator Kawu Sumaila, his partner in the empowerment project
National and state-level APC executives
Dr. Baffa Babba Dan Agundi, Chairman, National Population Commission
Engr. Abubakar Garba Ramat
Representatives of the Kano APC
Members of the NNPP and other political stakeholders who attended
Security agencies, journalists, and social media influencers who covered and amplified the event nationwide
He praised the media and digital reporters for “showing Nigeria in real time what is being done at this venue.”
Rt. Hon. Rurum concluded by praying for peace, safety, and the successful completion of all ongoing community projects.
“May Allah make today’s event fruitful and return everyone home safely,” he prayed.
