A recent statement by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alleging Senator Barau I. Jibrin and former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje were involved in instigating bandit attacks, has sparked widespread condemnation.
According to the press statement signed by Basiru Yusuf Shuwaki, Director-General, Social Media, Office of the Deputy President of the Senate, the Kano Governor is being called upon to back up his allegations with credible evidence.
The Governor is being called upon to provide credible evidence to support his claims, with Senator Barau’s office describing the allegations as “reckless and misleading”.
Senator Barau has a track record of supporting security agencies in Kano North, including providing vehicles and motorcycles to police stations and vigilante groups.
The Deputy President of the Senate’s office urges the public to disregard the allegations, claiming they are “politically motivated” and aimed at tarnishing Senator Barau’s reputation.
The people of Kano are advised to remain calm and pray for peace in the state amidst recent security challenges.
The full statement below:
WE CALL ON THE KANO GOVERNOR TO SWIFTLY SUBSTANTIATE HIS ALLEGATION WITH CREDIBLE EVIDENCE OR RISK LEGAL ACTION.
We have observed with deep concern the recent statement aired on verified and licensed radio stations wherein it was claimed that the Governor of Kano State directed security agencies to arrest the Deputy President of the Senate, Dr. Barau I. Jibrin, and former Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, over an alleged instigation of bandits to carry out attacks in parts of Kano State.
To us, and indeed to many citizens of Kano, this statement is gravely troubling. It represents an alarming descent into the dangerous politicization of security matters—an issue far too sensitive to be used for political gain.
We therefore categorically reject and strongly condemn this reckless and misleading allegation. We hereby call on the Governor to immediately provide verifiable evidence to back his assertion. Failure to do so will leave us with no option than to pursue appropriate legal action at the appropriate time.
It is important to remind the public that Senator Barau I. Jibrin has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to the security and wellbeing of the people, particularly in Kano North. His contributions include:
Provision of Hilux patrol vehicles to every police station across Kano North to strengthen operational capacity.
Distribution of 1,000 brand new motorcycles to security personnel in the zone.
Construction of modern police stations in Kano, Dawakin-Tofa, Gwarzo, and several other local government areas.
Given this undeniable record of support to security agencies, it is deeply unfortunate and disappointing that the Kano State Government would make allegations that appear politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of Senator Barau.
We urge the public—particularly the millions of supporters, loyal allies, and steadfast admirers of Senator Barau—to disregard this orchestrated political falsehood, remain calm, stay resolute, and continue to pray for lasting peace and a swift end to the recent security challenges facing our dear state.
Signed:
Basiru Yusuf Shuwaki
Director-General, Social Media
Office of the Deputy President of the Senate
