The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), in collaboration with Visionary Women in Agricultural Development in Africa and the Women Affairs Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has commenced activities to commemorate the 2026 FCT Farmers’ Day and International Day of Women Farmers.
The two-day event, scheduled for October 13 and 14, 2026, is taking place at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Area 10, Garki, Abuja. The celebration also features a Farmers-Investors Interactive Forum designed to strengthen partnerships between farmers and investors.
With the theme, “Celebrating Women Farmers’ Efforts and Impacts: Empowering FCT Smallholder Farmers for Sustainable Growth Towards the Achievement of Nutrition and Food Security in Nigeria,” the event seeks to recognise the contributions of women farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural development and strengthening food security.
Speaking exclusively to the media, the FCT Chairperson of AFAN, Dr. Perpetual Nkechi, disclosed that the 2026 celebration marks the third consecutive edition of the annual event, following previous celebrations in 2024 and 2025.
She explained that Visionary Women in Agricultural Development in Africa, a subsidiary of AFAN, is committed to promoting women’s inclusion in decision-making processes across the agricultural sector, not only in the nation’s capital but throughout Nigeria.
According to her, the celebration also seeks to highlight the critical role women play in ensuring food security and advancing the development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
Dr. Nkechi further stated that the FCT chapter of AFAN uses the annual celebration to appreciate the National Agricultural Development Fund and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for their support and encouragement to farmers across the country.
She specifically acknowledged government interventions, including the annual distribution of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs, noting that such initiatives help ease the challenges confronting farmers and support agricultural productivity.
The gathering is expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to explore investment opportunities, empower smallholder farmers and develop strategies to improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods across the Federal Capital Territory.
Through the celebration, organisers aim to strengthen collaboration among agricultural stakeholders, promote women’s participation in the sector and advance efforts towards sustainable food production and nutrition security in Nigeria.
