AN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH DELIVERED TODAY, 16TH SEPTEMBER, 2023 BY THE NEW CHAIRMAN, CONFERENCE OF SPEAKERS OF STATE LEGISLATURES IN NIGERIA, RT. HON. ADEBO OGUNDOYIN (SPEAKER, OYO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY).
– PROTOCOL
It is only pertinent for me to start this speech by expressing my profound adoration to the most High God for this special day.
Having thanked God, my immense and enormous appreciation is extended to every member of this Conference for the honour you bestowed on me by electing me as the new Chairman of the Conference.
I therefore accept this honor with a great sense of gratitude, humility, responsibility and an overwhelming determination to selflessly serve this assemblage of highly revered Rt. Hon Speakers of Nigeria’s State legislatures.
Firstly, I would like to say that today marks another significant milestone in my life and indeed in my political journey because as the youngest amongst you, you have unhesitantly given me the mandate to steer the ship of the Conference not minding my young mind. I see this as one of the highest honors bestowed on me and one of the greatest challenges and responsibilities placed before me in recent years. I am however poised for the task and ready to justify the confidence reposed in me by all our highly esteemed Speakers of State legislatures in Nigeria. I shall work and relate with everyone as we are all indispensable stakeholders if the new Executive council of the Conference must deliver on their mandate
May I request that you all join me in congratulating the outgoing Executive Council of the Conference led by an incredibly astute lawmaker, the Speaker of Bauch State House of Assembly, Hon Abubakar Y. Suleiman for their commendable efforts in projecting and actualising the objectives of the conference in the last two years.
I want to assure everyone that the newly elected Executive Council is ready to take up the responsibility from where they have stopped. We are not only going to work assiduously to achieve the goals of the Conference, we will also set more ambitious and realistic goals not only to place the Conference on a higher pedestal by working to make it more relevant in the grand scheme of things in our dear nation but we will equally build and ensure a more robust connection and network with other parliaments, parliamentary organizations and various notable institutions across the world.
We will walk our talk by rising to every occasion on time and offering solutions to problems affecting us generally and individually while also pursuing policies that will strengthen the affinity and mutuality amongst state legislatures in general, and all the state parliamentarians in particular.
We will explore possible ways of ensuring a harmonized and uniformed House Standing Rules for all state legislatures in order to enhance our legislative institutions and processes as well strengthen our oversight functions. This will assist us in addressing emerging challenges, and aligning with international best legislative practices.
Please, permit me to say that what we plan to pursue and achieve in the next two years God’s willing are contained in my manifesto or what I tagged “A Vision For A Stronger Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria.”
All these we plan to vigorously strive for putting in mind the collective interest of every member of the Conference and every state legislator and legislature irrespective of regions, party affiliations and creeds. May God grant us outstanding success.
To end this address, I would like to thank everybody for a seamless transition to another Executive Council, indeed like our motto in Oyo State – The Conference is setting the pace in democratic ideals.
Thank you for the honor once again.
Long Live the Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria.
Long Live all the Speakers
Long Live all the State Legislators
Long Live all our States
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Thank you.
Rt. Hon Adebo Edward Ogundoyin
Speaker
Oyo State House of Assembly.
